Five Intriguing Heavyweight Fights That Could Take Place in 2025
The heavyweight division is arguably enjoying the most successful period in the division’s rich history. Since the involvement of Riyadh Season and Turki Alalshikh, we have seen the first undisputed heavyweight title fight (Oleksandr Usyk vs. Tyson Fury) since Lennox Lewis defeated Evander Holyfield. We have seen many heavyweights enjoy memorable wins against rivals, such as the stunning win for Daniel Dubois against Anthony Joshua and Joseph Parker’s impressive victories over Deontay Wilder and Zhilei Zhang. With so many moving parts in this stacked division, including the growing influence of virtual sports in boxing simulations and fan engagement, we are looking at five intriguing bouts that could take place in 2025.
Heavyweight Boxing: Five Fights That Could Happen in 2025
Daniel Dubois or Joseph Parker vs. Oleksandr Usyk or Tyson Fury
Usyk and Fury will meet again on December 21 in their highly anticipated rematch. Whoever wins will be the unified champion, holding three belts. Joseph Parker is in great form, winning his last five fights since losing to Joe Joyce. The New Zealand fighter deserves his opportunity for the IBF crown against “Dubois,” and whoever wins in that fight could feasibly challenge for the undisputed heavyweight crown. It was doubtful if we would ever see another after Lewis, and to get two undisputed heavyweight bouts inside of one year would be extraordinary.
Anthony Joshua vs. Daniel Dubois or Joseph Parker
After the fight between Dubois and Anthony Joshua, attention quickly turned to the rematch, but wear and tear to AJ curtailed those plans, with “Dynamite” moving on to the Parker fight. With Eddie Hearn confirming there is no serious injury to AJ, a bout in 2025 looks likely – and a match-up with the winner of Parker and Dubois is a real possibility.
Anthony Joshua vs. Tyson Fury
Joshua vs. “The Gypsy King” is a fight many of us have dreamed of. In 2020, a two-fight agreement was rumoured – before Fury ultimately faced Deontay Wilder for a third time, and the dream fight for many drifted away. His Excellency has spoken previously about his desire to make Fury vs. AJ. Regardless of the outcome in the Usyk rematch, it remains to be seen what desire “The Gypsy King” will have to continue, but if the fire still burns, we could finally see AJ-Fury in 2025.
Martin Bakole vs. Daniel Dubois
The IBF heavyweight picture has recently been updated with the governing body ordering Martin Bakole vs. Efe Ajagba for the right to be the mandatory challenger for the title held by Dubois. Bakole has been described as many as the heavyweight bogeyman, and a potential matchup with Dubois would be a vicious shootout between two heavy hitters. A Bakole-Dubois fight promises plenty of fireworks, potentially shaking the heavyweight division to its core.
Agit Kabayel or Zhilei Zhang vs. Anthony Joshua
On the stacked Riyadh Season February 22 card, Agit Kabayel will return to face the fearsome Chinese heavyweight Zhilei Zhang for the WBC interim title. The winner of this fight will elevate themselves higher in the division and could face Joshua before a tilt at the full version of the title. AJ is ranked number six by the WBC and a fight against the winner of Kabayel-Zhang is a possibility that would provide plenty of action and intrigue.
The five possible fights mentioned here are just some of the possibilities in this thriving age of heavyweight boxing and His Excellency is more than capable of making some or maybe all of these matchups.
