Chris Eubank Jr. Eyes Rematch and Redemption: Talks New Goals Ahead of Boxxer Debut

On October 12, at the Kingdom Arena, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on a stacked Riyadh Season card, Chris Eubank Jr. (33-3, 24 KOs) will make his Boxxer debut on the Dmitry Bivol vs. Artur Beterbiev undercard against Kamil Szeremeta (25-2-2, 8 KOs). The Brighton fighter has spoken to Steve Bunce on the 5 Live Boxing Podcast about how his goals have changed while hinting at plans for a fascinating rematch.

Brighton Man Looks Ahead to a Vital 12 Months

Talking about turning pro in 2012 and if he expected to still be fighting over 10 years later Eubank Jr. said: “Coming into it, I never thought about where I’d be in X amount of years, it was always just train, win the next fight, train win the next fight. I never really looked too far into things.”

He continued: “I had goals, but I never thought I’d be 35 years old (still chasing big fights).”

Steve Bunce then asked Eubank about his early goals as a professional: “The goals were just always to prove everybody wrong and to display everything Id been grafting my ass off doing since I was 14 years old in the gym.”

He added: “As you get older, you learn to just care less and less about what other people think and just do what makes you happy.”

Eubank Jr spoke about his aim for when he retires: “When I retire, I want to look back at my career and be fully content.”

What’s Next for Chris Eubank Jr.?

Talking about the next 12 months, the Brighton fighter stated: “We’ve got some very exciting fights over the next 12 months and it all starts in Saudi on October 12.”

Referring to the criticism he’s received for the opposition he will be facing (Kamil Szeremeta): “Some people are calling it a warm-up fight. The guys got a great record. He’s got pedigree, he’s been in with (Jaime) Munguía and GGG, he’s not an idiot.”

He continued: “I’ve been out of the ring for a year, so that is the perfect type of an opponent for things to go wrong or for me to get back on the horse, get back into the swing of things and make these mega fights over the next 12 months.”

After talking about a plan, Bunce asked the Brighton fighter if he was the one who wanted the Billy Joe Saunders rematch: “Of course, the same way as the (Liam) Smith (fight), I could have taken much bigger fights for more money. I wanted that rematch. I needed to rectify that, and I still need to rectify this fight with Saunders. I don’t think he’s a better fighter than me. I don’t think he won that fight that night, regardless of what people say.”

He continued: “That is a fight (the rematch) that can be made.”

He added when pressed on a potential rematch with Saunders: “There is a plan, that’s all I’m gonna say, but there is absolutely a plan.”
