Three Fights to Look Forward to in September Including Heavyweight Showdown

In 2024, we have witnessed many great fights, with Oleksandr Usyk defeating Tyson Fury to become the heavyweight champion of the world, Terence Crawford becoming a four-division world champion, and the recent war between Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Serhii Bohachuk, to name just three. We also have some memorable fights scheduled for the rest of the year – including the much anticipated light heavyweight match-up between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol. At Big Fight Weekend, we want to highlight a few fights each month, and we are starting with three fascinating fights in September’s boxing schedule to look forward to.

Boxing Schedule: Three Fights in September to Look Forward to

Canelo Álvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga – September 14

Canelo Alvarez is still one of the biggest draws in boxing and returns to the ring on September 14 to defend his WBC/WBO and WBA super middleweight titles. The fight will occur at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Fights fans in the U.S. and Canada can catch the action on DAZN PPV, while Prime Video PPV and PPV.com will also broadcast the action.

It will be Puerto Rico vs. Mexico, and Berlanga needs to utilise his excellent jab and be accurate with his single shots and combinations. He must keep Canelo guessing what’s coming next. The Mexican still clearly carries power, as he showed knocking down Jaime Munguía in round four. Alvarez is exceptional at picking his punches, and it is vital Berlanga punches in between Alvarez throwing to keep him guessing.

Anthony Joshua vs. Daniel Dubois – September 21

On September 21 at Wembley Stadium, Anthony Joshua vs. Daniel Dubois will headline a fascinating Riadyh Season card. The fight will be shown live on DAZN PPV, PPV.com and TNT Sports. It’s an impressive card, with every fight providing intrigue, but the main event should give all watching plenty of fireworks.

Dubois appears rejuvenated after his wins over Jarrell Miller and Filip Hrgovic, and Anthony Joshua is high on confidence – after his impressive victories over Otto Wallin and Francis Ngannou. Dubois proved his heart was big enough in his two recent wins, and his chin was strong enough to take massive right hands from Hrgovic. AJ looks better than ever under the tutelage of Ben Davison and Lee Wylie, with improved footwork and his devastating KO power returning.

Sandy Ryan vs. Mikaela Mayer – September 27

On September 27 live on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ESPN+, Sandy Ryan will take on Mikaela Mayer for Ryan’s WBO women’s welterweight title. The entire card will take place at Madison Square Garden Theater, New York. It has the potential to be a thrilling title fight.

Mayer is relentless and doesn’t stop coming forward. She picks her punches well and throws everything with thought. Her pressure tactics make her a tough competitor for any opponent. Ryan is a hugely difficult opponent to face. She punches with impressive power from a distance and uses her jab excellently. Her combination punching also does plenty of damage. With these two styles, it seems almost impossible, we won’t see a fan-friendly fight.
