It was not the prettiest of wins, but Teófimo López (20-1, 13 KOs) did enough against his opponent to convince the judges that he had won.
The reigning WBO super lightweight champion got the unanimous decision win over Jamaine Ortiz (17-2-1, 8 KOs) to successfully make the first defence of his title. Scores were 117-111 and 115-113 (x2). López spent much of the fight trying to come forward while Ortiz was content with moving out of the way and attempting to counter, but missing many of his shots. In spite of how the bout turned out, attention now turns towards potentiel future clashes. Big Fight Weekend takes a look at two possible opponents for Lopez’s next bout.

Arnold Barboza Jr.
The latest WBO rankings have Arnold Barboza Jr. (29-0, 11 KOs) as their number one contender. It may not be long before López is ordered to face him. However, it is important to note that López does have “super champion” status with the WBO. This allows him to extend the period between mandatory defences. Regardless, Barboza has worked his way up the rankings and is due a shot at the belt at some point. López’s performances of late make this potential bout a lot closer than one would think.
Devin Haney
Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) has a fight lined up against Ryan Garcia in April, but his status as a network free agent makes a bout with López a real possibility later this year. The reigning WBC super lightweight champion won his title with a dominant decision against Regis Prograis. Should Haney emerge victorious, he could theoretically leverage his network free agent status to make a fight between the two for the summer or later in the year.
