What’s Next for Jaime Munguía After Stoppage Win Over John Ryder?

On Saturday, January 27, Jaime Munguía (43-0, 34 KOs) impressed under the tutelage of Freddie Roach (32-7, 18 KOs) as he dropped John Ryder four times on the way to a ninth-round TKO victory. Big Fight Weekend tipped the Mexican to win, with the by-numbers breakdown supporting that. Munguía done what “Canelo” couldn’t do and stopped the English fighter. Attention now turns to what comes next for the unbeaten Mexican.

Recap of Jaime Munguía vs. John Ryder

Munguía started the faster, showcasing his impressive hand speed. In the second round, he dropped Ryder with a right hand. The Mexican fighter kept up the pressure, but Ryder showed good ring IQ to spin off the ropes and retake the middle of the ring. Round three saw the London native fire back, but Munguía’s speed was causing him problems, which saw him drop the Brit again in round four.

Despite some success in the middle rounds for Ryder, it seemed Munguía had the power to hurt him at any moment. The Tijuana native increased the pressure in round nine as he sought the stoppage and dropped Ryder twice more – before referee Wes Melton waved off the fight.

Canelo Alvarez

When asked after the fight about a potential bout with Canelo Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs), Munguía spoke about how it would be a great fight and that he would be honoured to share the ring with him. It’s clear the Tijuana native is much more thoughtful with his output under Freddie Roach. His hand speed will cause any super middleweight problems.

“Canelo” is extremely powerful and accurate with his punches, which would undoubtedly cause issues for Munguía. Alvarez is an exceptional counter puncher, something Munguía would have to be wary of, because “Canelo” has the power and accuracy to KO any super middleweight. A potential fight between the two Mexicans would seemingly provide plenty of action.

Edgar Berlanga

Edgar Berlanga (21-0, 16 KOs) enjoyed a perfect start to his professional career, winning his first 16 bouts by stoppage. The New York native carries plenty of power and speed, making him a problem for any super middleweight.

The American fighter also counters effectively and is adept at putting together hurtful combinations, as seen with his first-round destruction of Ulises Sierra in 2020. A potential fight between him and Munguía would provide plenty of fireworks, with both capable of knocking out the other.
