On February 26, 2022, Taylor defeated Catterall by a controversial split decision. Since that defeat, many in the boxing world, including Catterall, have called for a rematch. In the interview with Boxing Social, Sam Jones was forthright on how negotiations were progressing: “Top Rank want the fight, Josh’s advisor/lawyer wants the fight, everybody wants the fight, it’s over to Josh Taylor.”
When asked regarding timeframes on negotiations, Jones was adamant it needs to be done soon. He added: “I don’t personally believe he wants the fight.” When asked what needs to happen to get the fight agreed, Jones said: “Josh Taylor needs to agree to the fight, simple.“
Looking back at “Day of Reckoning,” he described Joseph Parker vs. Deontay Wilder as “incredibly one-sided.” Jones also cast doubt on the level of competition Wilder has faced throughout his career.
Anticipating the question regarding the winner of Fury vs. Usyk, Jones predicted: “I do think Tyson Fury is going to beat (Oleksandr) Usyk.“
