Amanda Serrano Cruises To Victory Against Danila Ramos

Amanda Serrano (46-2-1, 30 KOs) successfully retained her WBO, IBF and WBA titles with a unanimous decision victory over Danila Ramos (12-3, 1 KO). All three judges scored the 12-round fight 120-108. The fight headlined an event at the Caribe Royale Orlando in Florida, USA. Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) promoted the card that aired on DAZN.

What made this fight unique is that it was fought over 12 three-minute rounds. Generally, women’s bouts are contested over 10 two-minute rounds. The Florida Athletic Commission permitted the fight to be fought over 12 three-minute rounds after both fighters agreed to do so. Additionally, the WBO, IBF and WBA agreed to sanction the clash. The WBC refused to do so due to a belief (which is not based on empirical medical fact) that the 12×3 format poses various health risks to women.

The fight began with Ramos keeping her distance and Serrano walking her down. Serrano’s jab caused Ramos’ left eye to swell early on. This continued into round two. As the rounds went on, Serrano began tagging Ramos with increasing frequency. Despite Ramos’ attempts to keep away from power punches, she was unable to avoid Serrano’s shots.

In the middle rounds, Serrano continued to walk down Ramos and land an array of shots. Although there were times Ramos landed her power shots, they did little to deter Serrano from stalking her down. To her credit, Ramos was able to remain standing despite the high number of power shots she got hit with.

In the latter rounds, Serrano also focused her attacks to the body. Although she had her opponent stunned a number of times towards the end of the fight, Ramos remained standing. Despite Serrano’s best efforts to get the stoppage victory, it was not meant to be.

Post-fight comments

“I want to thank all of you guys for coming out to support women’s boxing,” said Serrano. “This was a history night. Thank you guys for making history with me together.”

“I’m extremely happy,” said Ramos via an interpreter. “I’m extremely happy to be here. I had a long way out, with a lot of suffering and a lot of prejudice against women. And now we’re here making history with Amanda. I’m very proud and very happy, and on to the next one.”

Serrano-Ramos undercard results

Damian Lescaille (6-0, 4 KOs) stopped Ray Barlow (7-4, 4 KOs) at the 2:58 mark of round nine. Barlow also went to the canvas in the fourth round of this ten-round welterweight bout.

In a lightweight clash, Benigno Aguilar (11-0, 4 KOs) won a split decision against Alexander Rios (7-1, 3 KOs). Scores for this six-rounder were 58-55 and 57-55 for Aguilar which overturned a score of 57-56 for Rios. Aguilar knocked down Rios once in round five.

Krystal Rosado-Ortiz (2-0, 1 KO), who is managed by Serrano, won a unanimous decision against Kata Pap (1-1, 1 KO). Scores for this super flyweight bout were 40-36 (x3).

In a cruiserweight clash, Damazion Vanhouter (5-0, 3 KOs) won via unanimous decision against Nafys Garner (0-1, 0 KOs). Scores were 40-36 and 39-37 (x2).

Just before the broadcast began, Antonio Vargas (17-1, 9 KOs, 1 NC) beat Hernán Márquez (47-11-2, 33 KOs) via unanimous decision. Scores for this ten-round bantamweight bout were 99-89 (x3). Márquez went to the canvas once in round two.

Also before the main broadcast on DAZN, Euri Cedeño (6-0-1, 6 KOs) and Dayan Depestre (1-0-1, 1 KO) fought to a split draw. Scores for this six-round middleweight clash were 58-56 for Cedeño, 58-56 for Depestre, and 57-57.

Ángel Chávez (9-0, 7 KOs) won a unanimous decision against Sladan Janjanin (37-17, 26 KOs). Scores for this light heavyweight bout were 60-54 (x3).
