Joe Goosen On Ryan Garcia Split- ‘Will Always Be Friends With Ryan’

Future hall of fame trainer Joe Goossen is speaking out just days after it has become public that lightweight contender Ryan Garcia has decided to split with him. Goossen spoke exclusively Thursday night with our insider Dan Rafael on the break up, recapping Garcia’s defeat by TKO with the hands of Gervonta Davis and what the future will hold for Ryan and for Goosen?

“He’s a serious kid and he was very dedicated. And we have a tremendous relationship and we still do,” Goossen said to Dan. “Ryan called me (last) maybe Sunday…the day before the news hit about us not working together. Obviously, I will always be friends with Ryan. Look, I had Ryan when he was 17 years old in my gym. I’m the one who encouraged him to turn pro before he was 18…

Then, when Ryan eventually signed with Golden Boy, throughout his career after different fights, he’d say “did you see that fight? what did you think?,” Goossen continued.

“….the same thing applies here. Ryan and I will always be friends. We’ll always be friendly. We’ve got a very good personal connection to each other. And, I cherish that. I really do. Ryan is a very special kid, he’s really bright and he appeals to a lot of my senses. And, he’s a tremendous fighter and athlete.”

Goosen’s track record

Goossen is certainly a championship proven trainer in his own right having previously worked with former world champs Michael Nunn, Diego Corrales and most recently, former unified heavyweight champ Andy Ruiz among many others. And, Goossen is a 2023 inductee coming up to the international Boxing Hall of Fame later this Summer.

Goossen has also been seen over the past several years as a television analyst for Fox Sports coverage of Premier Boxing Champion fight cards. Goossen’s involvement in broadcasting the sport is currently in limbo as it appears that Fox has gotten completely out of the boxing business for now with PBC’s fights.

As for 23 year old Garcia, the loss to Davis is certainly a set back and now we wait to see which direction he heads next in his career.
