Sebastian Fundora- Some People Are Trying To Skip Me

With his latest Showtime/PBC main event looming for three weeks from now, interim WBC 154 lb. champ Sebastian “Towering Inferno” Fundora met with the media Monday afternoon  And, Fundora made clear that while he’s focused on his current opponent, Brian Mendoza, he’s also believing that there are others looking to leap over him as a possible contender for undisputed champ, Jermell Charlo.

“I feel like I’ve been proving myself over and over again. We’re waiting for our shot to fight for the title. They keep putting guys in front of me who they say will knock me out or expose me, but I keep proving them wrong….,” Fundora told the media virtually Monday.

“I’m just building up. My dad and I had plans that we talked about and we talked about contending and fighting for a title around this age. Things are working out. We’re where we want to be and just looking to get that title fight soon.

“I feel like some people are trying to skip me in order for the title, but I’m remaining patient and staying focused on this fight. I just have to keep moving forward while everything else gets dealt with.”

Fundora, 20-0-1, 13 KOS, will put his interim WBC title on the line on Saturday, April 8th live on Showtime from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, CA, headlining a Premier Boxing Champions event.  He was last in the ring in October in a dominant decision victory over veteran Carlos Ocampo to solidify his slot as a top contender for Charlo.

For his part Charlo is still recovering from a broken left hand and is due to reschedule his title defense against WBO #1 contender Tim Tszyu later this Summer.

Still, the 25 year old Fundora wants to hold his “spot in line” and in the way is Mendoza. A 29 year old fighting out of Las Vegas, Mendoza brings a 21-2, 15 KOs record to the ring early next month.

He comes off a fifth round KO over former world champ Jeison Rosario in November to put him in position for the literal “biggest challenge of his career” against the 6’6″ Fundora.

“A win in this fight would mean everything. I’m trying to get to that next level and I finally feel like I have the right team around me. I feel like I have the right experience and I’m in my prime. I’m entering my prime and the time is now,” Mendoza said Monday.

Now, he gets the chance, but it won’t be easy against the imposing size with power behind it, in Fundora.
