Andy Ruiz-Luis Ortiz Headline Solid Sunday Show
Labor Day Weekend is here but we still have fights! The main card of the weekend is the attractive Premier Boxing Champions pay-per-view card on Sunday night headlined by the Andy Ruiz Jr.-Luis “King Kong” Ortiz heavyweight title eliminator.
On Saturday night on DAZN, junior bantamweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada is in a hometown defense against Argi Cortes. We previewed the PPV card and Estrada-Cortes as well as covered the news of the week. There is also my exclusive interview with Claressa Shields, the unified women’s middleweight champion, who on Sept. 10 will face amateur nemesis Savannah Marshall for the undisputed championship.
Here’s what’s on the show (in order):
My impressions of the interviews I had earlier in the week with light heavyweight titlist Dmitry Bivol and Zurdo Ramirez that we used on a special podcast.
Discussion of the purse bid results this week for the Joshua Buatsi-Jean Pascal IBF light heavyweight title eliminator and little-known MarvNation Promotions’ shocking winning offer for the vacant WBC junior welterweight title between Jose Zepeda and Regis Prograis.
My view of the bad decision by the WBO to sanction the Joe Joyce-Joseph Parker fight as an interim heavyweight title fight.
Some talk of the Jake Paul-Anderson Silva in the works for Oct. 29.
My interview with Shields, who will meet Marshall — who handed Shields her only lifetime defeat in the amateurs — for the undisputed middleweight title on Sept. 10 on Marshall’s turf in London in the main event of the first card at The 02 to be headlined by women. Shields also elaborated on her desire to meet Katie Taylor at a catch weight.
Our breakdown and preview of the Ruiz-Ortiz heavyweight eliminator can be heard here:
Thoughts on the passing of Earnie Shavers, the huge-punching 1970s heavyweight contender who twice fought for the heavyweight title against Muhammad Ali and Larry Holmes.
Previewing the Isaac Cruz-Eduardo Ramirez lightweight fight and the return of Abner Mares after more than four years out of the ring to face Miguel Flores at lightweight in bouts on the Ruiz-Ortiz PPV.
Previewing Estrada-Cortes and discussion of an Estrada win setting up a third fight with Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez.
