Tim Tszyu Overcame Adversity To Pull Out Decision Saturday Night

It wasn’t easy in the United States debut for top Jr. Middleweight contender Tim Tszyu, but in the end his debut was a positive one, as he defeated American veteran Terrell Gausha over 12 rounds to remain unbeaten.

The Australian found himself on the canvas in the first round, but got up and out fought the Ohio native Gausha over the next 11 rounds on his way to a unanimous 116-111, 115-112, and 114-113 decision on Saturday night in Minnesota.

The immensely popular Tszyu came to the Twin Cities and the famous “Armory” arena wanting to impress not only the locals, but the audience on Showtime Premium Service throughout America. But, instead, he wound up on the deck quickly from a Gausha counter, straight right hand to the chin. Tszyu, rose a little shaken and took some more punches in round one, but eventually fired back, as well.

After surviving the first round, Tszyu, now 21-0, 15 KOs, took control stalking his 34 year old opponent and trapping him frequently on the ropes and in the corner for combinations to the head. And, he was also very effective with hooks to the body.

While Gausha, now 22-3-1, was game, he also did throw nearly enough and was often trying to wait and counter Tszyu. In doing so, he was getting hit 2 and 3 to 1 often in the rounds. The finally tally from Compubox showed Tszyu massively ahead of Gausha on power punches landed at 207-106 for the 12 rounder.

Even in victory, Tszyu was humble and said he knows that he must keep improving if he wants to be a world champ,

“Look. This sport…there’s so much to learn,” Tszyu told Showtime in the ring. “You gotta just keep going. Keep training hard. Keep improving and keep fighting warriors like Terrell Gausha.”

Though Tszyu didn’t get a knockdown, much less the desired kayo or stoppage, he was impressive in this one and will remain as both the WBO and WBC #1 ranked challenger at Jr. Middleweight.

And, the belief is that he’s in line to get the winner of the May rematch between Jermell Charlo and Brian Castano for the Undisputed 154 lb. world titles. That bout has been delayed by two months for a biceps injury for Castano.

And, Tszyu knows that he will likely have to fight the victorious champ right back in the U.S. and possibly in Las Vegas later this year.
