WBA Wants Trevor Bryan-Daniel Dubois Next

Off his decision win Saturday night, WBA “regular” Heavyweight champ Trevor Bryan is now being ordered by the organization to fight Britain’s Daniel Dubois next.

The World Boxing Association made the announcement late Monday that Bryan-Dubois must happen in the next six months,

From their website, the Venezuelan based organization wrote about their written notification to both fighters,

The World Boxing Association (WBA) ordered the mandatory fight between Trevor Bryan, the heavyweight world champion, and his mandatory challenger, Daniel Dubois, from Great Britain.

Bryan received special permission to make an optional defense last Saturday, January 29 against Jonathan Guidry. Once the bout was completed, the WBA gave a period of 180 days from the date of that defense, to make the mandatory fight against Dubois.

On Monday, January 31, communication was sent to both fighters’ teams to begin negotiations for the bout immediately.

In addition, the WBA also ordered the eliminator fight between the third ranked fighter in the division, Robert Helenius and the number four, Hughie Fury, who will also have 180 days to fight as of January 29th.

The WBA continues to move towards the title reduction as planned and the recent decisions are aimed at achieving the goal of a single champion.

As we wrote, Bryan defeated the late replacement Guidry by a split decision Saturday night in Warren, OH.  The New Yorker Bryan, now 22-0, controlled the fight with his superior height and reach landing repeated jabs and straight right hands. Guidry from Louisiana was able to occasionally land counter left hooks, but nothing sustained.

Bryan wore down Guidry, who took the fight on 8 days notice, and eventually dropped him with a barrage of punches at the end of the 12th scoring a knockdown with :02 remaining. Guidry rose wearily after the bell to go to the cards.

Still, despite being out fought in most of the rounds and being knocked down, one judge gave Guidry a 115-112 card.

Nonetheless, Bryan’s victory sets him up with his highest profile opponent next in Dubois.

Dubois, 17-1, is a top five Heavyweight from London, who was last in action making his USA debut on the undercard of Jake Paul-Tyron Woodley I in Cleveland last August. That night he destroyed American Joe Cusamano scoring three knockdowns in a first round stoppage.

Known as “Dynamite” for his hulking physique and right hand power, Dubois has 16 KOs in his 17 pro wins. However, he suffered a one sided loss and a fractured left eye socket in his TKO defeat to fellow Englishman Joe Joyce in November 2020.

That fight set Dubois back in terms of having to heal and then, resume his career. He did so with a 2nd round KO in June of 2021 over Bogdan Dinu.

Bryan is remarkably promoted by 90 year old legend Don King and was the co-feature on his fight card this past Saturday. He and King have to get the deal done with Dubois in short order before a purse bid might allow Frank Warren of Queensberry promotions to potentially swoop in to grab the fight and have it in the U.K.
