Who’s Next For Jaime Munguia?

Undefeated Middleweight Jaime Munguia has been the name of several opponents in the ring, and we now know at least who it will be realistically next month.

Munguia (36-0, 29 KOs), according to a report in ESPN Deportes, is expected to be back in action on April 24. The location is not locked down yet but the man who will be opposite of him in the ring has been narrowed down to D’Mitrius Ballard (20-0-1, 13 KOs), Shane Mosley Jr. (17-3, 10 KOs), and Luke Keeler (17-3-1, 5 KOs).

You’re reading that list and wondering what happened to a possible contest against Gennadiy “GGG” Golovkin? For the time being, he is being ruled out as he is looking at a potential unification bout with WBA champion Ryota Murata. Tough break for Munguia as, once again, a shot at GGG is once again not in the cards.

But back at the list of challenges presented to Munguia, it looks like another step-up fight for him either way with the listed names. Let’s start with the in-house Golden Boy fighters for Munguia, with Ballard first, who was last in action in 2019. “Big Meech” in that fight fought to a majority draw against Yamaguchi Falcao in a very even matchup.

In February, Mosley was last in action, beating down Cristian Olivas en route to a fifth-round stoppage win. Mosley has been on a four-fight win streak since losing to Brandon Adams in 2018.

Quigley was last seen in the ring before the pandemic, last winning against Fernando Marin in January 2020.

The list of suitors in this game show “Who’s Next for Jaime Munguia?” needs a winner and if I’m spitballing who it would be, I’m picking that his next fight would be against Quigley. Quigley was the name they tried during the pandemic last year but fell through for various reasons. If you were to ask me who I’d want to see, it would be that one. They both have a familiar opponent in Tureano Johnson. Munguia stopped Johnson last October, while Johnson defeated Quigley in July 2019.
