Toledo Fighter DeAndre Ware performed Heroic CPR Friday

A wild scene and a heroic life-saving measure were part of the Top Rank Boxing’s Friday fighter weigh-ins prior to their Saturday night’s ESPN televised card in Las Vegas.

This, as Super Middleweight fighter, DeAndre Ware, a firefighter from Toledo, Ohio, responded to a Top Rank official in distress by performing CPR on him.

Details are still being put together, but Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix offered this update Friday afternoon on social media:

Crazy scene in Las Vegas: Just before the weigh-in for Saturday's show, Pete Susens, a coordinator with Top Rank, collapsed. DeAndre Ware, a Toledo firefighter who is fighting on the undercard, performed life saving chest compressions. Susens, I'm told, is OK.

Ware is 13 – 2 – 2 and is slated to fight in a 10-round bout on the undercard of the Jamel Herring-Jonathan Oquendo main event Saturday night at the MGM Grand Conference Center “bubble.”

Top Rank official Pete Susens apparently collapsed with Ware nearby, and Ware did not hesitate to put his paramedic training to use. It’s still unclear if Susens was suffering a full fledged heart attack or not? However, he is said to be stable Friday evening.

Ware was last in action on a Showtime Boxing televised under card in August of 2018, when he lost on an 8th round TKO to Vladimir Shishkin. He is taking on Steve Nelson Saturday night in the co-main event prior of Herring-Oquendo.

He later Friday afternoon relayed his own tweet about springing into action:

I’m here for my fight but I had to put EMS skills to work and do some cpr. Happy to say the guy was talking a bit and was alert headed to the hospital. I’m thankful! I feel I saved a life.

Ware’s most significant win to date came in February of 2019 by scoring a majority decision against previously unbeaten Ronald Ellis on another Showtime card in Rochester, NY. He won the WBC’s Continental America’s 168 lb. belt that night with two other secondary belts.

Clearly, Ware will be lauded as a hero and promoter Bob Arum should probably at least double his purse after what happened on Friday.
