Legal Woes for Ex-World Champion

TMZ reports that Charlo has also been charged with a misdemeanour for leaving the scene of an accident. The original incident in May, saw Charlo produce a blood level of 0.15, which is above the .08 limit in Texas. The police have said, the ex-middleweight champion got into an argument with the other driver involved, before being arrested after fleeing the scene.

The ex-WBC titlist was stripped of his title the following day after the incident and is due in court for a hearing on November 7, according to the report from TMZ.

Losing the Belt and Missed Opportunities

The WBC had supported Charlo through his troubles outside the ring including mental health and previous legal woes. Following his comfortable unanimous decision win against Juan Macias Montiel in 2021, “Hit Man” was not seen in the ring until a pedestrian 10-round unanimous decision win against Jose Benavidez Jr. in November 2023. The Texan native badly missed the weight limit of 163 pounds by weighing 166.4 for the fight.

“Hit Man” was linked to a possible opportunity against super middleweight king Canelo Álvarez – but he was unable to be ready for the fight, with the fight instead going to his twin brother Jermell Charlo, who lost a wide decision to Canelo with the judges scorecards reading 118-109 x2 and 119-108. The 34-year-old Houston resident was then rumoured to be fighting Canelo before Jaime Munguía was given the opportunity, with Álvarez retaining his titles.

Despite the WBC’s support through personal struggles and missed opportunities, it remains to be seen if he can rescue his career.
