Today, boxing world title fights take place around the globe and are more accessible to watch than ever before. Sometimes, championship bouts do not receive as much attention and go underreported. The focus of these pieces will be on clashes ranging from atomweight to heavyweight that had the WBA, WBC, IBF, and/or WBO titles on the line. Over in Argentina, the minimumweight division got its latest titlist.
Title Fights From Around the World: Tina Rupprecht Becomes Undisputed, Sol Cudos Now Champ at Minimumweight
Tina Rupprecht vs. Sumire Yamanaka Fight Recap
Tina Rupprecht (15-1-1, 3 KOs) is now the undisputed atomweight world champion following her majority decision win over Sumire Yamanaka (8-1, 3 KOs).
While one judge saw the action 95-95, the other two had it 99-91 and 96-95. In January last year, Rupprecht became the WBC atomweight champion by defeating Fabiana Bytyqi. She then added the WBA and WBO titles by beating Eri Matsuda later in the year. With her most recent win, Rupprecht won the IBF belt and is now undisputed at 102 lbs.
Rupprecht-Yamanaka headlined an April 5 card promoted by SES Boxing and Blanko Sports at the MBS Arena in Potsdam, Germany. Boxing fans in the country could catch the action live on MDR. According to a post made by one of the promoters, people in 40 other countries were also able to watch. It was also available on Fight Sports Max in certain regions.
Despite one scorecard having it incredibly wide for Rupprecht, the fight itself was a close one. Both fighters let their hands go the moment the first bell rang. Between the two, it was Rupprecht who had the more agile footwork, somethingshe used to land punches from different angles. Despite it being a close fight, the German was able to land more clean punches over 10 than her opponent. In the end, two of the judges saw Rupprecht as having done the better work and had her winning on their scorecards.
Sol Cudos vs. Maria Baumstarh Fight Recap
Sol Cudos (10-0-2, 3 KOs) had to overcome a knockdown en route to a split decision win over Maria Baumstarh (12-7-1, 8 KOs) that saw her become the latest champion at minimumweight.
While one judge had it 96-93 for Baumstarh, the other two saw it 96-93 and 95-94 for Cudos. With the victory, Cudos is now the IBF minimumweight champion. The title had been vacant since the retirement of Seniesa Estrada.
Cudos-Baumstarh headlined an April 5 O.R. Promotions card at the Estadio F.A.B. in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Boxing fans in the country could catch the action live on TyC Sports.
Baumstarh gave her opponent a tough fight, particularly in the first half of their bout. In round seven, a left cross sent Cudos to the canvas. Despite this, the fighter from Moreno was able to get up and finish things strongly in the last three rounds. Though it appeared that Baumstarh had done just enough to get the win, it was Cudos who wound up having her hand raised after two of the judges scored the fight for her.
