Raúl Curiel vs. Jordan Panthen fight recap

Raúl Curiel (17-0-1, 15 KOs) got the unanimous decision win over Jordan Panthen (11-2, 9 KOs), but he was made to work for it.

Scores were 98-92 and 97-93 (x2). Due to the bout being arranged on such short notice, the pair fought 10 rounds at a catchweight of 158 lbs.

Panthen had a busy opening round, throwing a high volume of punches at his opponent. Curiel utilized clinches in an attempt to limit the number of shots coming his way. He took some time to figure out how to deal with Panthen’s offence.

Curiel was better able to impose his style after round four. Panthen’s tendency to overextend left him susceptible to counters. Curiel found it easier to land his power shots as his opponent started to tire. He was also more accurate. Both men were starting to lean on each other a lot more as well.

A straight right hand in round nine buckled the legs of Panthen. Curiel tried to end the fight with a barrage, but the American recovered quickly. Panthen had moments of success in the tenth, but the harder shots came from his opponent. Curiel’s accuracy allowed him to win rounds despite Panthen’s come forward, high volume approach. He was ultimately the victor on all three scorecards.

Undercard on DAZN

Jorge Chavez (15-0-1, 8 KOs) won a unanimous decision against Manny Flores (20-2-1, 16 KOs). Scores for their 10-round super bantamweight contest were 98-92, 97-93, and 96-94. Chavez is now the Californian super bantamweight champion with the victory. This was the second meeting between the pair. They had fought to a majority draw last year.

A fight between Joel Iriarte and Jireh De Los Santos was initially scheduled for this card. De Los Santos reportedly withdrew last minute after agreeing to fight at a higher weight class when Iriarte did not make the welterweight limit.

Ruslan Abdullaev (4-0, 2 KOs) won via sixth round knockout against Eduardo Abreu (14-2-2, 10 KOs). The official time of stoppage for this eight-round super lightweight bout was 2:59. Abreu was first dropped in the third from a right hook to the head. He was knocked down again in round five from two hooks upstairs followed by a straight right. The fight came to an end following a barrage of punches with Abreu still standing.

Opening the broadcast on DAZN, Cayden Griffiths (7-0, 6 KOs) won a unanimous decision against Lesther Espino (10-8, 8 KOs). Scores for their six-round super welterweight fight were 60-53 across the board. Espino was knocked down in the second from a left hook upstairs.

Fabian Guzman (9-0, 8 KOs) won via sixth round knockout against Jose Rodriguez (3-2, 2 KOs). The official time of stoppage for this eight-round middleweight clash was 2:36. Rodriguez was stopped standing after a period of limited resistance against the high volume of shots coming from Guzman.
