Jordan Gill Stuns Michael Conlan in Belfast
Conlan came into the ring looking to banish the memory of the defeat to Luis Alberto Lopez – and the dramatic loss to Leigh Wood. The Irishman started well, showing good variation in his punches, before being buzzed by a right hand from Gill. The second round saw the English fighter land a flush left hook, following up with a right hand, knocking Conlan to the canvas.
The Irish fighter survived the round and showed good work over the next couple of rounds, with some eye-catching combinations while controlling the distance more effectively. Despite the improvements from him, the Englishman continued to hurt him. The seventh round proved to be the final round as Gill landed a barrage of heavy punches, which forced the referee to step in and stop the fight, awarding the Huntingdon-born fighter a stunning upset win in Belfast.
Post-fight Quotes
Gill was europhic in the ring: “I enjoyed it.” He continued: “It’s been a great week in Belfast.” The Englishman added: “I wanna be a world champion.”
Gill also touchingly described the tough year he has experienced since his loss to Kiko Martinez and splitting up with his wife. He went on to say how he heartbreakingly considered taking his own life before thanking his team and saying: “I’ve turned my life around in the last four months.”
Promotor Eddie Hearn described Gills’s performance as “a breathtaking performance.”
