Erislandy Lara Stops Danny García in Dull Affair

Erislandy Lara (31-3-3, 19 KOs) won via ninth-round corner retirement against Danny García (37-4, 21 KOs) in an incredibly dull fight.

The time of stoppage was 3:00. With the win, Lara retained his WBA middleweight title and defended it for a second successive time after Gennadiy Golovkin had vacated it. The fight itself saw both fighters throw and land very few punches. Following the conclusion of round nine, García opted not to continue with the bout, giving Lara the victory.

The fight took place on the undercard of Canelo vs. Edgar Berlanga at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV. It was on a Premier Boxing Champions event promoted by Canelo Promotions and TGB Promotions, in association with Matchroom Boxing. Fight fans worldwide could catch the action as a pay-per-view with Prime Video, DAZN, PPV.com or TrillerTV.

The early rounds saw neither boxer commit much offensively. Both men stayed an arm’s length away from each other for the most part without throwing or landing many punches. Lara won rounds by simply being slightly more active.

The passivity continued into the middle and late rounds. Towards the end of round nine, García took a knee after getting hit with a straight left land. “Swift” was able to get up and make it out of the round. However, once he got to his corner, a discussion between him, his team and referee Thomas Taylor resulted in the fight being terminated.

Caleb Plant (23-2, 14 KOs) won via ninth-round technical knockout against Trevor McCumby (28-1, 21 KOs, 1 NC). The time of stoppage for this 12-round super middleweight bout was 2:59. McCumby knocked down his opponent once in round four from a left hand. In the ninth, Plant unleashed a barrage of punches with McCumby on the ropes, causing referee Allen Huggins to put an end to proceedings.

Rolando Romero (16-2, 13 KOs) won a unanimous decision against Manuel Jaimes (16-2-1, 11 KOs). All three judges had the 10-round super lightweight clash 99-91 for Romero.

Stephen Fulton (22-1, 8 KOs) won a split decision against Carlos Castro (30-3, 14 KOs) in a 10-round featherweight contest. While one judge saw the action 95-94 for Castro, the other two had it 96-93 and 95-94 for Fulton. With over two minutes to go in round five, Fulton went to the canvas from a one-two.

Ricardo Salas (20-2-2, 15 KOs) won via third-round knockout against Roiman Villa (26-3, 24 KOs). The time of stoppagefor this 10-round welterweight clash was 2:06. Villa went down following a straight right hand and jab. He was unable tobeat the count of referee Mike Ortega, giving Salas the knockout win.

Jonathan López (17-0, 12 KOs) won a unanimous decision against Richard Medina (15-3, 8 KOs). All judges had the eight-round super featherweight bout 80-71. López sent his opponent to the canvas late in the eighth with a straight left hand.
