Arnold Barboza Jr. vs. Kenneth Sims Jr. fight recap
Arnold Barboza Jr. (33-1, 11 KOs) returned to the win column with a unanimous decision win against Kenneth Sims Jr. (22-4-1, 8 KOs).
Scores for their 12-round welterweight bout were 120-108, 118-110, and 117-111. Barboza’s last fight was a loss to then WBO super lightweight world champion Teófimo López last year. He has since moved up to welterweight.
Both men had a slow start. In the early rounds, neither put much behind their punches as they sought to stay at range of each other. Barboza was the more active of the two, choosing to box off of the back foot for the most part. Sims’ approach saw him land few of his punches. His opponent was racking up rounds by simply being more active.
Sims showed greater urgency in the final third of the bout. An accidental clash of heads in round 11 saw a cut appear on the top of Barboza’s forehead. Sim’s was also cut by his right eye, but to a lesser degree. Following the clash of heads, there were periods in rounds 11 and 12 where both men planted their feet and swung at each other. Those periods were short-lived, however, in a fight that rarely saw either fighter get out of first gear. It was ultimately the activity of Barboza that got him the win on the scorecards.
Oscar Collazo vs. Jesús Haro fight recap
Oscar Collazo (14-0, 11 KOs) gradually broke down Jesús Haro (13-4, 2 KOs) and claimed a sixth round technical knockout win.
The official time of stoppage was 3:00. Collazo remains the WBA and WBO minimumweight world champion with the victory. He won the WBO title in 2023 against Melvin Jerusalem. Collazo later claimed the WBA strap against Thammanoon Niyomtrong in 2024.
Haro proved difficult to hit as he was content with moving off of the backfoot. Despite Collazo pursuing his opponent around the ring, little was being landed by both men in the early rounds. The reigning WBA and WBO champion connected on several body shots in the third. This made moving around the ring harder for Haro.
Collazo continued to break down his opponent as the fight progressed. Despite Haro’s best efforts, there was little he could do against the Puerto Rican. He was simply not winning any rounds. Following the conclusion of round six, he was withdrawn from the contest, giving Collazo the technical knockout win.
Gabriela Fundora (18-0, 10 KOs, 1 NC) picked up another stoppage win, this time against Viviana Ruiz (10-3, 5 KOs).
The official time of the technical knockout was 1:25 of round six. Fundora remains the undisputed flyweight world champion with the victory. She attained the status in 2024 with a stoppage of Gabriela Alaniz.
The size difference was evident early on and Fundora had no trouble landing hard straights from a distance. A couple eye-catching overhand rights landed for Ruiz in round two, but she was still being outworked by the reigning champion. The Australian struggled to get on the inside thanks to the long reach of Fundora.
Round four saw Fundora drop her opponent with a right hook to the head, left uppercut, and another right hook upstairs. She appeared to have figured Ruiz out and started to pile on the pressure. In round six, Fundora backed the challenger into a corner and landed a barrage of punches. This caused referee Ray Corona to step in and end proceedings with Ruiz still standing.
