Title fights from around the world – Adelaida Ruiz becomes champion for the first time

Today, boxing world title fights take place around the globe and are more accessible to watch than ever before. Sometimes, championship bouts do not receive as much attention and go underreported. Big Fight Weekend commits to writing about boxing news, previews and recaps. As such, the site now has a recurring segment on championship bouts from around the world from the past week.

The focus of these pieces will be on clashes ranging from atomweight to heavyweight that had the WBA, WBC, IBF, and/or WBO titles on the line. This week’s edition of “Title Fights From Around the World” consists of one recap. In the United States, a new super flyweight world champion was crowned.

Adelaida Ruiz vs. Alexas Kubicki fight recap

Adelaida Ruiz (18-1-1, 8 KOs) is the latest to become a world champion following her unanimous decision win over Alexas Kubicki (13-3, 2 KOs).

Scores for their bout were 99-90 and 97-92 (x2). Ruiz is now the WBC super flyweight world champion with the victory. Asley Gonzalez was the previous titleholder and last defended it in December last year. The title has since been vacated and was put at stake for the bout between Ruiz and Kubicki.

Their bout took place on a Nov. 29 ProBox card at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, CA. Fight fans around the world could catch the action live on the ProBox TV YouTube channel.

Both women swung at each other the moment the first bell rang. This continued in the rounds that followed. When the pair were not standing in front of each other and trading, Kubicki would move around the ring off of the backfoot. However, she would immediately be dragged back into a slugfest.

A pivotal movement in the fight occured with under 30 seconds to go in round five. Ruiz landed a flurry of hooks to the head to send her opponent to the canvas. Kubicki got up, but was in survival mode for the remainder of the fifth. She returned to slugging in round six. Ruiz then started to have greater success when going to the body.

Both women were not afraid to exchange hard punches and did so until the final bell. While Kubicki was most certainly having success, Ruiz’s punches seemed to do greater damage. Although many rounds appeared to be close, the judges had Ruiz winning wide on their scorecards. The victory allowed her to become a world champion for the very first time.
