Vences wants Herring after Oquendo

Andy Vences (23-1-1, 12 KOs) is in action tonight inside the Top Rank “Bubble” as he co-main events the ESPN telecast against Luis Lopez (20-2, 11 KOs) in Las Vegas. Vences is looking to pick up his second win a row after losing by decision to Albert Bell last June on the Tyson Fury-Tom Schwarz card.

For Vences, the goal is to get a chance to take on the current titleholder at 130 lb. Jamel Herring.

Speaking with Boxingscene, Vences weighed in on Herring upcoming matchup with Johnathan Oquendo and expects the champ to win against Oquendo in their forthcoming matchup currently slated to headline in Vegas on July 14.

“For sure Herring beats Oquendo. He should be totally fine being the taller, rangier fighter which would then set him up to fight Carl Frampton. I understand why they picked Oquendo. He is on the short side. He pretty much fits the way Frampton is structured. Everyone always asks me what do I think about it. This is what I think, your job is to represent and fight the best. I got into boxing to become a world champion and fight the best fighters in my division,” Vences said to BoxingScene.com.

Vences calling out Herring for a fight goes back way before Herring won the title against Masayuki Ito last May. Check this call-out from March 2019 below:

“Whether I become a world champion and then fight the best fighters or fight the best fighters to then become a champion, it doesn’t matter. If things don’t go through with the Frampton fight due to the COVID-19 situation later on down the line, Herring is going to have to step up and fight somebody. I will be ready for that opportunity if it presents itself.

I would be honored to get that fight. I feel that is a fight that a lot of fight fans have been wanting, Vences versus Herring. We will see what happens. I will leave everything up to my manager Peter (Kahn) and Top Rank and the matchmakers Brad Goodman and Bruce Trampler to see what happens next.”

Vences tonight against Lopez, who many last saw getting outpointed and outgunned against Ruben VIlla in the States last May, is expecting the same result despite him coming in winning three straight. We’ll see as long as these “Bubble” shows continue, if any of the much-anticipated bouts happen like Herring-Frampton.

If not, then Vences could get his chance that he’s chasing for a hot minute against Herring.
