Stevenson (12-0, 7 KOs) and Gonzalez (23-0, 14 KOs) face off in what has been a bad blood rivalry in Reno for the vacant WBO featherweight title left behind by Oscar Valdez in August. The 2016 Olympic Silver Medalist Stevenson from Newark, New Jersey is embracing the chance that many haven’t had so quickly.
“My career has gone not the way I thought it was gonna go,” Stevenson said.”I honestly thought that it was going to take longer for me to fight for a world title but the timing is right and everything is perfect.”
“I’m fighting for a world title in my 13th fight. A lot of people haven’t done that and this is a big goal for me.”
One person that has been waiting a long time is the man Stevenson will be facing at the bell is Gonzalez.
“It’s about time I got my world title shot,” Gonzalez said in a press release back in August. “I’ve been asking for this opportunity for a long time.
For Stevenson, while not dismissing Gonzalez, feels he is on a different level than him that will come out in the main event that will air on the streaming platform ESPN+.
“Joet is a decent fighter…I always thought he was a good fighter but he got a little hype to him I guess, ut I’m just on a whole different level,” Stevenson stated.
We’ll find out Saturday night in the stomping grounds where Stevenson earned a plethora of his Olympic and amateur accolades.
