Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez Career Highlights
When tasked with putting together Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez‘s career highlights, one must ask themselves, “Where do I even start?” Canelo has had so many dazzling moments in his 62-fight career that it’s difficult to narrow down just a few key highlights. With that said, let’s dive into three scintillating performances from Canelo that left fight fans in awe.
(May 7, 2016) Canelo Alvarez vs. Amir Khan – For WBC and The Ring Middleweight Titles
A few months after capturing The Ring and WBC Middleweight Championships thanks to a unanimous decision victory over International Boxing Hall of Famer Miguel Cotto, Canelo put the gold on the line against Amir Khan. Khan went into the title bout on a five-fight winning streak, but his luck came crashing down in emphatic fashion. Canelo connected with a clean right hand in the sixth round that shut the lights off Khan.
(September 15, 2018) Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin 2
Canelo and Gennady Golovkin had a fierce rivalry that resulted in three fights. Their first encounter took place in 2017, and the bout was scored a split draw. This drew the ire of Canelo, who believed he won the fight despite some fans and experts feeling that “GGG” should’ve had his hand raised. Canelo didn’t leave much doubt in the highly competitive rematch, showing to be just a step ahead of Golovkin during crucial moments in the fight. Canelo also won the trilogy fight with Golovkin.
(November 6, 2021) Canelo Alvarez vs. Caleb Plant
Canelo Alvarez was all business in his quest for undisputed status in the super middleweight division. Going into his showdown with Plant, Canelo already held the the WBA, WBC, WBO, and The Ring gold. All that was left was the IBF title, which was held by Plant. Canelo connected with a devastating uppercut that floored Plant in the 11th round. Once Plant returned to his feet, Canelo swarmed him and scored another knockdown, leading to a TKO finish to lay claim to the undisputed distinction.
Canelo will be back in action on May 6. He’ll put all of his super middleweight gold at stake against John Ryder inside Estadio Akron in Guadalajara, Mexico.
