Ryan Garcia Confirms Surgery For Injury
Off his shocking loss to Rolly Romero earlier this month, Ryan Garcia has announced that he’s re-injured his right hand and had surgery on it.
First, Garcia, 24-2, 1 NC, looked terrible, at least offensively, in the shocking loss to Romero in New York City’s Times Square back on May 2nd. Garcia had very little offensive output and Romero did enough to score the 12 round decision, as a 12 to 1 underdog.
Sports Illustrated Chris Mannix reported on Tuesday afternoon that he had learned Garcia injured the hand during training and according to a source of his, Garcia had been receiving cortisone shots in the hand to not postpone the fight.

As we wrote previously, this is the same hand Garcia injured and had surgery on in October of 2021. The 26-year-old Californian has never won a world title. And, the biggest win of his career a year ago in a 12-round victory over WBC super lightweight champion Devin Haney was overturned, when Garcia failed pre and post-fight drug tests for the PED, Osterine.
Garcia’s latest costly loss
Those drug test failures earned him a one-year suspension by the New York State Athletic Commission that was only lifted shortly before the Romero fight. That fight was part of a double-header put together by Turki Alashikh and the Saudi Entertainment Authority in hopes of having Garcia rematch Haney later this year. However, Garcia obviously lost and Haney didn’t look much better in a boring, narrow decision over Jose Ramirez.
Mannix also reported on Tuesday that Oscar De La Hoya, who is Garcia’s promoter, doesn’t want a Garcia-Haney fight before Garcia goes ahead and rematches Romero somewhere later this year or early next year.
The talented Garcia has never been able to put together a successful run on the biggest stage during his career. This includes him having been beaten on a TKO stoppage by Gervonta Davis in April of 2023. Garcia also came into that fight with a rib injury that wasn’t known, but Davis dominated him from the beginning of the bout, knocking him down early. And, then eventually stopping him in their massive pay-per-view.
