Report- Whyte-Povetkin Rematch Set For November 21st

Looks like a rematch date has been set for the Heavyweight contender fight that ended August with arguably the punch of the year. Alexander Povetkin and Dillian Whyte are set to meet again in November.

This is according to a report from Mike Coppinger, insider of the Athletic, who wrote Monday that the two fighters looking to get a World Title shot now know their specific fight date:

It’s expected that Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing will make the Povetkin-Whyte second fight official with several other major fight announcements on Tuesday. This, as Matchroom will likely fill out the remaining 3 1/2 months of fight cards of the year.

Hearn alluded to as such on social media himself, Monday afternoon:

Back to the Heavyweight showdown set into motion at Matchroom’s “Fight Camp” August finale on their property. The former WBA Heavyweight Champ, Povetkin got off the canvas twice in the fourth round to level Whyte with a single left uppercut, less than :30 into round five. The referee didn’t bother to count, as Whyte laid motionless for several seconds.

The stunning reversal has ruined the short term plans of Hearn and Whyte to try to set up a WBC mandatory fight with new champ, Tyson Fury. Fury is still slated to fight for the third time, former champ, Deontay Wilder in December.

Meanwhile, while the Povetkin-Whyte rematch will likely be in London’s O2 Arena, Povetkin and his manager Andrey Ryabinskiy, had hinted late last month that he would love the second fight to be in Russia saying,

“I don’t see such a big difference boxing here or in the UK. I would want the fight to be here in Russia because there hasn’t been an event of such magnitude here for a long time.”

Still Povetkin, who just turned 41, obviously needs to “strike now,” as his name is back at the forefront of Heavyweight boxing. This is especially with Unified Champion Anthony Joshua, who knocked Povetkin out two years ago, slated to make his next title defense with Kubrat Pulev in December.

It’s believed that Hearn will make that fight official Tuesday for London for December 12th, as well.

One thing is for sure, if he clocks Whyte again, Povetkin will likely get another World Title fight in 2021 with someone.
