‘Would Have Found a Way’: George Groves Talks Muhammad Ali vs Oleksandr Usyk

The heavyweight division remains boxing’s premier attraction, drawing new fans and delivering memorable moments. Oleksandr Usyk has established himself as the division’s top fighter in recent years, with victories over Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois. Meanwhile, Muhammad Ali is widely regarded not only as the greatest heavyweight of all time, but also the greatest boxer in history. Former super middleweight world champion George Groves recently spoke to the Escapist magazine, revealing his pick in a fantasy matchup between Ali and Usyk.

Oleksandr Usyk Dominates Daniel Dubois for Undisputed Glory

George Groves Gives His Take on Muhammad Ali vs Oleksandr Usyk

On July 19, at Wembley Stadium, Usyk (24-0, 15 KOs) once again showcased his dominance at heavyweight, defeating Daniel Dubois (22-3, 21 KOs) for undisputed heavyweight glory. The mercurial Ukrainian controlled the fight from the start until the highlight reel KO in round five.

Talking to the Escapist, Groves discussed a hypothetical bout between Ali and Usyk: “Ali was fast, very fast for a heavyweight, but obviously a small heavyweight. He was light years ahead of his time in terms of not just his boxing ability, but his ability to control everything outside of the ring, mind games and the press. I think he would’ve found a way to beat an Usyk that no one else has. Usyk’s definitely the greatest heavyweight of this era by a country mile.”

The Future for Oleksandr Usyk

It remains to be seen what the next steps will be for Oleksandr Usyk. He has ruled the cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions, beating all major competitors. Will he face Joseph Parker for all four belts? Or will the Ukrainian vacate and face Tyson Fury or Anthony Joshua again? Jake Paul even appeared in the ring after Usyk’s win on July 19.
