Making of Champions: Abner Mares

The “Making of Champions” is a podcast that airs every Thursday at 5 pm ET on the Joe Louis Bourbon Facebook Page with Tonya Cole and yours truly. This week’s guest on the program is a former three-division world champion and analyst on Showtime and Telemundo Abner Mares.

(I wanted to get that right this time!)

We spoke to Mares amongst a myriad of topics, and the one thing I wanted to ask him about was who he would like to take on in his eventual return to the ring. Mares made it known that he wanted to get back into the ring. I asked him about the what-if of adding Vasiliy Lomachenko and gotten his thoughts on the contest following the big lightweight bout that took place, crowing Teofemo Lopez champion by unanimous decision.

“100% for sure,” Mares told us on The Making of Champions.”That’s a big name to have under your belt, and he’s still not done yet. He is what he is. He’s a great fighter and one of the best, and it’s sad in boxing that you lose one fight and no longer considered one of the best and greatest. But I’d love to have a fight against Lomachenko.”

Check the tweet stamp as Mares confirmed with is on the show that he picked Teofemo to win.

Mares picked Lopez to win cause “Lopez was the bigger man. He is not just a regular fighter. A lot of people didn’t give him credit, and he has a plan in every fight.”

Go ahead and check out our latest conversation with Abner, where he shares insights on the big-time pay-per-view matchup between Gervonta Davis and Leo Santa Cruz. We also talk about the upcoming contest this Saturday on Showtime, which he’ll be calling headlined by Sergey Lipinets and Custo Clayton, how he started rocking the masks before the pandemic, and more!

In this episode, he looks ahead to calling a match-up with one of his all time greatest challenges… and looks back at the people who have inspired him to become who he is. Yes, they're #boxers like @SUGAR RAY LEONARD and #JoeLouis but his greatest inspiration is from his mother who raised 11 children, and his wife and daughters who he says are his "champs."Join Hosts Tonya Cole and Marquis Johns of #bigfightweekend for this #TMOC #InspiringChampions show sponsored by #joelouisbourbon.
