Madison Square Garden Had Huge Stars Welcome Taylor-Serrano

There’s no overstating the significance for women’s boxing that the undisputed ladies world lightweight title showdown between unbeaten champ Katie Taylor and seven time world champ in lower classes, Amanda Serrano are bringing to famed Madison Square Saturday night.

And, to that end, “The Garden” rolled out an impressive list of current and former athletic stars, entertainers and actors to make Taylor and Serrano feel even more welcome. They posted this promo on their social channels Thursday afternoon,

From ladies boxing legends like Christie Martin and Layla Ali, to tennis hall of fame icon Billie Jean King, ladies professional golf star Morgan Pressel, stars of WWE pro wrestling, comedian/actor Tracy Morgan and on and on, they all sent their quick congrats on the achievement of being the headlining fight in the “world’s most famous arena” coming this weekend.

Now, for Matchroom Boxing and Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions the task of publicity, selling tickets and creating buzz is almost complete.

The only things left to do are to meet with the media a final time on Thursday, weigh-in Friday and then, turn it loose in what is arguably the most anticipated ladies title bout ever.

This title bout was originally set for the Summer of 2020, but ended up being delayed by the Covid 19 pandemic and then a contract dispute over money for Serrano. But, now, the 42-1-1 (30 KOs) Serrano finally gets her shot nearly two years later at the 20-0 (6 KOs) Lightweight queen in Taylor, who’s making her sixth defense on Saturday night.

Serrano has a deal with the internet Paul’s promotion, and that has raised her profile more quickly. This, as she just fought for the second time on Paul’s PPV card last December in Tampa, FL, winning the co-feature bout in a decision over veteran Miriam Gutierrez.  With the seven different world titles in the four weight classes, she is widely regarded as the most accomplished female championship boxer ever.

Meanwhile, for Taylor, the former Olympic Gold medalist from Irealnd is unbeaten at 20-0, 6 KOs, and just recently headlined on December 11th for Hearn at the Matchroom show in Manchester, England. She scored a 10 round decision over Firuza Sharipova to successfully defend her titles for fifth time, since becoming undisputed in a decision victory over Delphine Persoon.

That bout came against Persoon also at Madison Square Garden’s main arena on the undercard of Andy Ruiz’s TKO upset of Anthony Joshua in June of 2019.

Now, she’s back headlining there and against her toughest opponent to date.

And, the time for talking and promoting is drawing to a close.
