Hearn fires back at Jacobs-Chavez Jr Presser

With the dust settling on the legal proceedings out of the way, Daniel Jacobs and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. held their final press conference Tuesday in anticipation of their bout Friday night. That fight will air on Sky Sports in the U.K. and the United States on the streaming service DAZN, which will start at 7 p.m. E.T. with the main card beginning at 9 p.m. E.T.

It was written here earlier today that Chavez Jr. had won an injunction to be cleared to fight, which Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn briefly touched on as “an ordeal” in the presser. Hearn also took the end of the press conference to remind those who oppose it with the following:

“Thank you to everyone. Thank you to the haters! Thank you Bob Arum. He had plenty to say. I saw his comments. He’s cleaner than clean, right? This is a guy who wanted to take Antonio Margarito to another state after he found cement in his hand wraps,” Hearn cracked at the end of the press conference Tuesday.

The cement hands shot of Margarito is a pull that goes back to the former welterweight champ being under investigation back in 2009 for having a plaster-like substance found under his gloves during a fight he had with Shane Mosley. While the California State Athletic Commission eventually cleared Margarito, Margarito was a fighter under Bob Arum during which that incident went down. Hearn and Arum exchanging verbal jabs are going to be one of the more spirited conversations in boxing heading into next year.

While Hearn closed the show with that salvo, he spotlighted the main event at the Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoneix by saying:

“It has been a magical year, this fight for me was a natural for me. When Jacobs lost the middleweight title to Canelo Alvarez we felt it was time to move up to the super middleweight division. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. we know about the popularity with Julio, his father, this seemed like a natural fight to make. If you’ve watched on social media, Julio’s preparation for this fight, it looks like he has been training seven to eight times a day for this fight. This is Julio’s big opportunity to come back, and for Daniel Jacobs it’s his time to set up a shot at the world title in 2020.”

Now that the fight has been cleared for Chavez Jr., we’ll see how he fares in this comeback against the former world champ in Jacobs this Friday.
