Leli Buttigieg vs Jake Goodwin
In the first fight of the night, it was Leli Buttigieg (12-0, 4 KOs) vs Jake Goodwin (8-3-1, 1 KO) in a final eliminator for the English middleweight title.
It was a bright opening round, with both fighters having success. Goodwin had some success from his southpaw stance. Both continued to trade in the second round and had success, with Buttigieg landing the cleaner punches.
Goodwin continued to walk forward and pressure Buttigieg, who still had plenty of success, but the intensity from Goodwin pulled the 21-year-old into a firefight. In the sixth round, Buttigieg was deducted a point for his gumshield consistently coming out. At the midway point, it felt like the cleaner punches were coming from Buttigieg, but Goodwin appeared to be outworking his opponent.
In the seventh round, after more gumshield infractions, Buttigieg was again deducted a point. After the deduction, Leli had great success and rocked Goodwin on more than one occasion. Another back-and-forth round came in the eighth, with both having their moments, but the cleaner work appeared to be coming from Buttigieg.
In the ninth round, with it feeling close on the scorecards, Buttigieg landed a huge left hook, following up with two more heavy punches to score a dramatic TKO victory for the Newham resident. What a win, and what a fight to kick off the main card!
