At the OVO Hydro in Glasgow on May 24, Moses Itauma (12-0, 10 KOs) dazzled in his latest heavyweight fight against Mike Balogun (21-2, 16 KOs), stopping the tough American in the second round of their heavyweight clash on the undercard of Josh Taylor vs Ekow Essuman. Wardley Praises Itauma and Balogun
Moses Itauma vs Mike Balogun marked the Brit’s first fight in 2025, and it was well worth the wait. Itauma showcased his trademark speed, poise and devastating power, delivering three knockdowns before the referee waved it off after the third. The final KO blow in round two highlighted his precision and timing, as Balogun came forward, the 20-year-old southpaw stepped back and unleashed a sharp right cross to end the fight in style. Now ranked no. 1 with the WBO, a significant step up appears to be next for the fast-rising contender.
Reflecting on the toughness of Balogun, Itauma said: “I’d like to have a word for Balogun and how he just kept getting up. There was a time that I thought he was gone and he just kept springing back up and I thought, damn, this man is a tough guy. So yeah, credit to him as well.”
“Moses is obviously clean, crisp and just that check hook on the way in was fantastic to see. It’s a credit to the hard work he’s been putting in the gym, as well. He’s only getting better and better. He’s getting sharper. Everything is just getting better and better for him. It’s fantastic to see,” said Wardley praising Itauma.
Moses Itauma: Meeting Expectations
Following his latest win, Itauma spoke to Umar Ahmed from BoxNation about meeting expectations: “Everyone expected me to do it. So, it’s like, there’s not a lot of joy from it. Maybe one day, when I get when an opposition, where people don’t think I’m gonna win.
“And then I overcome it, I might feel different. But as of right now, it’s what im supposed to do.”
When asked if he was happy with his performance, Itauma did not hesitate: “I am. I’m over the moon. I’m glad,” said Itauma.
He added: “Fulfilling people’s expectations is hard.”
Moses Itauma looks destined for the very top of the heavyweight division. With his rapid rise to no. 1 in the WBO rankings, Queensberry may struggle to find willing opponents, but major fights now appear just around the corner for the talented contender.
