Erik Robles Upsets Lee McGregor

Lee McGregor (12-0-1, 9 KOs) took on Erik Robles (13-1, 9 KOs) at the Meadowbank Sports Centre in Edinburgh, Scotland, in a super bantamweight matchup. The fight was aired live on Channel 5 in the UK and Ireland while DAZN broadcasted the event worldwide. Wasserman Boxing promoted the event. Robles won the barnburner via a shock unanimous decision.

McGregor, an Edinburgh native, fought there for the first time since making his professional debut in November 2017. Although he has fought in Scotland since making his professional debut, all of those bouts were in Glasgow. For Robles, it was his first time venturing outside of Mexico.

Lee McGregor vs. Erik Robles fight recap

Both men wasted no time in letting their punches fly. McGregor and Robles were landing clean combinations within the opening stanza. Round two continued at a similar pace. Early on, McGregor had much success with the uppercut, landing it cleanly several times. Despite this, Robles returned fire, landing punches in bunches to the head and body.

The pace did not slow down in the middle rounds. McGregor continued to have success with the uppercut while Robles continued to land bruising hooks. For the most part, McGregor pushed forward as Robles was content with staying on the backfoot. Despite throwing a high volume of punches, neither appeared to be affected by it.

As the fight entered the final rounds, both men dug deep in a bid to come out on top. Arguably the best round of the fight was the tenth. In the second half of round ten, Robles landed a number of punches that sent McGregor to the ropes. McGregor came back strong however, as he appeared to stun Robles in the final 30 seconds of the tenth. Robles recovered and made it to the end of the round.

Things did slow down in the final two rounds. Both men did not throw as much as they were in the early stages of the bout. There was also a fair bit of clinching in round 12. As the fight neared to a close, McGregor held his hands aloft, clearing believing that he had done enough to earn the decision. However, that was not to be as Robles won the bout with scores of 116-113 and 115-113 (x2).
