Eddie Hearn Urges Devin Haney to Make a Critical Change for Future Success
Eddie Hearn Urges Devin Haney to Make a Critical Change for Future Success
On April 20, Ryan Garcia defied the expectations of many in the boxing world to defeat Devin Haney at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Controversy soon ensued, with Garcia failing a VADA test for the banned PED Ostarine, a story broken by Dan Rafael.
“Kingry” was subsequently suspended for one year, which Devin Haney reacted to by saying: “I want to thank the New York State Athletic Commission for doing the right thing and making the right decision.” Following the defeat, Haney hinted at an extended break, but the current WBC champion in recess has hinted a return could soon be on the cards. Eddie Hearn has also had his say on a Haney comeback when speaking on the All the Smoke Fight podcast.

Turki Alalshikh shared his thoughts on ‘The Dream’ potentially making a comeback in a rematch against Garcia during a conversation with Charlie Parson on X.
Ahead of any potential comeback, Hearn has spoken about his belief that a change is needed for this comeback to be successful: “I think he has to look at his team. His dad, I love Bill. He’s got his back 100% but is he the right person to take him forward strategically in the ring?” asked Hearn when speaking about a comeback for Haney, who he has promoted in multiple fights.
Hearn continued, explaining that the team could do with some new ideas: “I never liked this three or four trainer thing where they’re in the changing room, and they’re doing the pads with him. AJ went through that system when he boxed Usyk – he was so lost.”
The Future
Despite the failed tests and subsequent ban of Garcia, it is clear the naysayers have enjoyed having their say on Haney’s performance. “The Dream” showed his ability in his win one-sided win over Regis Prograis – but despite the loss against Garcia changed to a no-contest, Haney will need to rebuild his confidence and a tune-up fight before any rematch with “Kingry” should be strongly considered.
