Dina Thorslund Unifies Titles With Win Over Yuliahn Luna
Dina Thorslund (20-0, 8 KOs) now holds two of the four major bantamweight belts after winning a unanimous decision over Yuliahn Luna (25-4-1, 4 KOs). Scores were 99-91, 98-92, and 97-93 for Thorslund. The title unification took place at the Gråkjær Arena in Holstebro, Denmark, and was available on FITE in many countries. With the win, Thorslund now holds the WBC and WBO bantamweight titles.
The scorecards suggest a comfortable victory for Thorslund, but it was not quite that. She used her aggression to edge a number of close rounds. Luna attempted to counter throughout the fight but it was not enough to deter her opponent or outright win the majority of the rounds. Thorslund’s pressure allowed her to earn the unanimous decision in the end.
“I would like to give an applause to Luna, because I want to be the best, and that means I have to meet the best. I just want to thank her for an amazing fight. This is what real boxers want, the tough fights,” said Thorslund after the fight.
Thorslund to unify against Nina Hughes?
WBA bantamweight champion Nina Hughes (6-0, 2 KOs) was on commentary for the bout, fueling speculation of another unification fight. Hughes joined Thorslund in the ring after the clash where they both acknowledged each other.
“Me and Nina want to meet. But she wants to meet Ebanie [Bridges] first to take the IBF and keep the WBA, then we can meet and fight for the four belts,” Thorslund said.
“I think Dina’s a great champion. She’s got two belts now, I want to take Ebanie Bridges’ belt off her so I have two belts, and we can fight for undisputed. It’d be a great fight and honor to share the ring with her,” said Hughes.
At present, Bridges’ (9-1, 4 KOs) scheduled ring return is unknown. She last fought on the undercard of Josh Warrington-Luis Alberto Lopez where she defeated Shannon O’Connell via eighth round technical knockout. Following the win, she suffered a hand injury that has kept her out of the ring since.
