Crafty Footwork and Precision Strikes: Charlie Edwards Dominates in Impressive 2024 Opener

On Friday, April 12 at York Hall, Bethnal Green in London, Charlie Edwards (19-1, 7 KOs) defeated Georges Ory (17-4-1, 2 KOs) by unanimous decision to win the WBC silver international bantamweight strap, in what was the start of a new chapter for the Brit under the tutelage of Stephen Smith for Wasserman Boxing. The bout was shown on Channel 5 in the UK.

Round one was positive for Edwards as he used his feet well and used his jab effectively to control the distance. He used his feet well to avoid Ory’s attacks and picked him off on the back foot. The second round was much better for Ory as he landed two good left hands, but Edwards was still in control and picking his punches well, maintaining the distance.

Over the next few rounds, Ory had fleeting moments of success when he could get close, but these moments were brief. Edwards continued to move well as we got to the middle rounds. His lateral movement ensured he could create varying attacks and pick his punches well while pirouetting out of danger when needed.

As we edged towards the end of the fight, the Surrey-born fighter was in cruise control working brilliantly off his back foot, landing some nice combinations while controlling the pace.

The final two rounds saw the Frenchman try to push the pace – but Edwards looked extremely comfortable and in control, switching between the head and body and using his excellent movement to control the distance and create attacks. It’s been an impressive first fight in 2024, as he proved hard to hit throughout but landed his combinations throughout and showed his vast skillset. “Don’t call it a comeback,” but that was an impressive start from the Brit. As the fighters gathered in the centre of the ring, the scorecards were read out with all three judges scoring the bout 98-92 in favour of Edwards.

An emotional Charlie Edwards spoke after his win, and when asked about the win, he said: “It was very special.” He continued: “I’ve been messed around so much and lied to.”

“I was going to give up at certain stages.” In a message to his rivals, he said: “I’m taking you all out.”

Undercard

Christian Fetti (1-0, 0 KOs) won his professional debut in a junior lightweight bout against Eliecer Quezada (24-23-3, 9 KOs), with the referee scoring the contest 40-36.

Tom Welland (4-0, 2 KOs) impressed during his junior featherweight win against Marvin Solano (24-14, 8 KOs), with the referee scoring the bout 59-54.

Jesse Brandon (4-0) continued his unbeaten record, winning by decision against Jakub Laskowski (4-29-1, 2 KOs), with the referee scoring the junior welterweight contest 40-36.

Oliver Zaren (11-0, 2 KOs) dominated John Harding Jr.(11-3-2, 2 KOs), with the referee scoring their super middleweight bout 80-71.
