George Groves Picks Favourite Canelo Fight — And His Choice Might Surprise You

Canelo Alvarez will long be remembered as one of the greatest boxers of all time. He received criticism like many of the greats, but he has shared a ring with a plethora of rivals. The Mexican is looking to further enhance his legacy on September 13 when he defends his undisputed super middleweight title against Terence Crawford at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Former super middleweight world champion George Groves has spoken to Casino Beats and revealed his favourite Canelo fight, and it’s not Floyd Mayweather or the upcoming mega-fight with Crawford.

The Mexican legend has been involved in many memorable fights in his career, including his loss to Floyd Mayweather, alongside his significant wins over Billy Joe Saunders, Miguel Cotto, Callum Smith and Austin Trout among many others.

Many Alvarez fans will look back fondly on the memorable trilogy against Gennadiy Golovkin, with the Mexican winning 2-0-1. Will the upcoming Crawford showdown be the biggest Canelo fight yet? Former super middleweight Groves has revealed what he believes is his biggest fight: “I’m not sure (if it’s that big of a fight) because obviously it’s Crawford, is he pound for pound number one?

“He’s got to be in many people’s eyes there or thereabouts. Canelo’s been at the top for so long and hasn’t done anything wrong. So it is pound for pound, vs pound for pound. But I feel like the weight, because the weight’s so different, I was more excited I think with GGG vs Canelo than I was this one. But that’s just because I thought that was an incredible fight,” said Groves.

The Future for Alvarez

Canelo has the mega-fight with Crawford to deal with, but many are already speculating on what comes next. He agreed to a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season, but Eddie Hearn has recently said: “I think the Crawford fight will be his last fight. There’s no intel there and I’ve not had any conversations with him. But after watching that Scull fight — and don’t get me wrong, Scull was unbelievably negative — after Crawford, what is there to do? Do you wanna go to England and have a fight?

“Yeah, I guess that could appeal to [him]. But I don’t know.I just think Father Time, the body, the mojo, I don’t know. I actually thought during the Scull fight, ‘I wouldn’t be surprised if he just didn’t fight Crawford.’”

It remains to be seen, whether this will be the last crescendo for Canelo. No matter what the Mexican legend decides, his legacy will surely live on.
