Unveiling Five of Mexico’s Greatest Boxers: Champions of All Time

On September 14, at the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, one of the greatest Mexican boxers of all time, Canelo Álvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) will defend his WBC, WBA and WBO super middleweight titles against Edgar Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) in the main event of a Canelo Promotions – in association with Matchroom Boxing. The entire card will be shown live on DAZN pay-per-view in all regions except Mexico and LATAM. Ahead of fight night, it’s time to pay our respects to the boxing history in Mexico and look at five of the greatest Mexican boxers.

Canelo Álvarez

Saul Canelo Álvarez is still a dominating figure in the world of boxing and up until the point of writing has a professional fighting record of 61-2-2, 39 KOs. He has won world titles, at Junior middleweight, middleweight, super middleweight and light heavyweight.

Canelo has been involved in some of the biggest fights throughout his career, with some of his most memorable wins coming against Gennadiy Golovkin, Sergey Kovalev, Miguel Cotto, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Billy Joe Saunders and Jaime Munguía to name just a few. His resume is second to none, and he is showing no signs of losing his desire to keep creating history.

Julio César Chávez

Julio César Chávez will undoubtedly be at the top of many lists regarding the greatest Mexican boxers of all time, with an outstanding record of 107-6-2, 85 KOs, winning world titles in three different weight classes.

He has been involved in many memorable fights, including one of the greatest bouts of all time against Meldrick Taylor, which saw the Mexican win by TKO with just seconds left in the final round. He carried outstanding power and always looked to be on the front foot, making him a crowd favourite. His incredible ability saw him build up an unbelievable 89-0-1, before losing to Frankie Randall.

Ricardo López

Ricardo “El Finito” López was an exceptional boxer who won titles at strawweight and junior flyweight. For those who haven’t seen Lopez box, check him out on YouTube. He carried impressive power that saw him amass a professional record of 51-0-1, 38 KOs.

He had great accuracy in his punches and carried a granite chin, which makes it hard to argue against him being the No. 1 strawweight of all time. His unbelievable fight record only has one blemish, with a draw against Rosendo Alvarez, which he later avenged.

Erik Morales

Erik Morales won titles in four different divisions, which makes him a must for any list involving great Mexican boxers. He finished with a record of 52-9, 26 KOs, and was in many memorable fights between 1993-2012.

“El Terrible” was involved in a truly brilliant trilogy against Marco Antonio Barrera, who he beat in their first fight. A sensational win against Manny Pacquiao was also a career highlight, alongside other significant triumphs against Wayne McCullough and Kevin Kelley to name just two.

What can you say about a great like Marco Antonio Barrera that hasn’t been said by millions of boxing fans? A champion in three divisions, he recorded a legendary 2-1 win over Morales in their memorable trilogy.

He recorded a brilliant and dominating win over Prince Naseem Hamed for the lineal featherweight title. He could box on the back foot or on the front foot, which made him versatile and dangerous alongside his punch power, which saw him amass a fight record of 67-7, 44 KOs. His victory against Kennedy McKinney is a must-watch as was his dominating of many other high-calibre opponents throughout his career.
