Abner Mares replaces trainer Garcia for Robles

It has been a moment since Abner Mares was in the ring and, like so many others during this time, going to be a little while longer.

The former three-time world champion Mares (31-3-1, 15 KOs), speaking with ESPN Deportes, says that he’ll do it with a new trainer in Manny Robles instead of Robert Garcia.

“I told Robert (Garcia) that I was not going to continue training with him, we were on good terms,” Mares told ESPN Deportes. “My new coach will be Manny Robles, who is a great coach, has good style and has worked with great fighters, world champions, such as Andy Ruiz, Óscar Valdez.”

Mares hasn’t been in action since taking on Leo Santa Cruz back in June 2018. Mares was the original opponent to fight Gervonta Davis last year, but an eye injury prevented it. Mares during that time underwent treatment for the eye to become clearer after a few months.

With this in mind, Mares announced that his return was planned for May, but now he does not know when he will be able to return due to the COVID-19  pandemic? Whenever that is planned, don’t expect it to be for too much longer.

“We had planned to return in 2020, we had more or less the agenda planned to return in May, two fights in the year, but now I think I will only fight once, we will see when,” Mares said. “It is a bit awkward, but at the same time I start thinking about what everyone is going through, fighters who had dates and then they were canceled, David Benavidez being one of them.

Many fighters have been affected and I am more sorry for the fighters because it is a very difficult time.”

“I have always tried to be a professional. I’m going to do about two fights, maybe three before I retire,” Mares explained.
