A Don King Boxing Card In 2021?
A Don King Boxing Card In 2021?
That is not a typo. Hall of Fame boxing promoter Don King is scheduled to put on a boxing card to close out the year’s first month.
Big Fight Weekend made a call out to the Florida State Athletic Commission. It confirmed that the card scheduled to take place on Friday, January 29, at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Florida and is so far a go that it will feature Manuel Charr and Trevor Bryan’s heavyweight title matchup. Remember Manuel Bryan? Pepperidge Farms remembers back in 2017 when he won the vacant WBA regular heavyweight title against Alexander Ustinov, and that title has been collecting dust ever since.
Charr has since tested positive for Drostanolone and Trenbolone scrapping a fight against Fres Oquendo in September 2018 and has waiting on a bout with Bryan which has been marinating for at least two years.
Bryan has been waiting just as long for this title shot after beating BJ Flores back in 2018 for a chance at Charr. One of the many reasons holding this fight up is Don King has been winning purse bids for this fight and stalling it out to the point the fights get canceled or scrapped altogether. The pandemic didn’t help King out in 2020 as this fight was scheduled then but was scrapped.
Shoutout to boxing fan Paul M, who asked about the card to get the ball rolling.
Manuel Charr vs Trevor Bryan, Shumenov vs Murphy, Stiverne vs Lovejoy all on 1/29 in Florida! Is Don King actually promoting a show? @BoxrecGrey @JakeNDaBox @jevan_bay @dougiefischer @MikeCoppinger @weaksauceradio ?

So where can you watch this card? As of this writing, no television was scheduled or listed anywhere for the bout card, which will include a contest between Beibut Shumeno and Raphael Murphy and a match between Bermane Stiverne and Christopher Lovejoy. All but Lovejoy didn’t see ring action in 2020.
Lovejoy, who was supposed to be in action in October but was yanked off the Matchroom Boxing fight cards as King blocked him from fighting on it. Lovejoy on his social posted the tweet of a quasi-heavyweight tournament with these names listed.

While Lovejoy tagged the fine folks at the World Boxing Super Series, they didn’t like, retweet, or are behind this. Honestly, who is behind this, or is this even being a thing? All we got is a date and the name Don King so far. King’s track record has been non-existent with cards as of late coming to fruition; maybe this is a “new year, new me” in that regard.
