Five Greatest Australian Boxers of All Time
Australian Boxers: Jeff Fenech
A three-weight world champion, Fenech was known for his aggressive style and relentless pressure. He held world titles in the bantamweight, super bantamweight, and featherweight divisions. His fierce determination and exciting fights made him one of Australia’s most celebrated boxers.
Born in 1964, in Sydney, Australia, Fenech gained fame for his aggressive style and remarkable skills in the ring. He was a world champion in multiple weight classes, beginning with his IBF bantamweight title win over Japan’s Satoshi Shingaki in 1985.
His outstanding career saw him also win the WBC super bantamweight, WBC featherweight and WBC super featherweight titles. He is also known for his tremendous trilogy with hall-of-famer Azumah Nelson. The two fought to a controversial draw in June of 1991. Nelson won the rematch by TKO in March of the following year to take Fenech’s WBC super featherweight crown. Eventually, the two fought their “grudge match” in June 2008, when Fenech came out of 12-year retirement at age 43. Nelson was a ridiculous 49-year-old and Fenech got his revenge in a stoppage win.
His toughness, longevity and boxing prowess earned him a place in the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2002. After retiring from boxing – he has remained involved as a trainer and commentator on Australian TV.
His career is noted for his resilience and tenacity, helping him become one of Australia’s all-time hero fighters.
Kostya Tszyu
An outstanding light welterweight champion, Tszyu is recognised for his technical skill and power. He held multiple world titles and is remembered for his impressive knockout victories and dominance in the ring.
Born in 1969, in Serov, Russia. Known for his exceptional skills and power in the ring, Tszyu was a dominant force in the light welterweight division. He held the WBA, IBF, and WBC light welterweight titles during his career, and he was renowned for his precise punching and excellent technique. He also became an “adopted fan favourite” of the Aussies with many of his title bouts being held there.
The Australian’s fighting style was characterized by his ability to deliver powerful punches with accuracy and his strong defensive skills. He had an eight-year unbeaten run as a world champion and his victory over American Zab Judah in 2001 is arguably his best. Watch the booming KO at the end of round two here.
That’s, where he became the first light welterweight, three-belt undisputed champion ever and was the highlight of his Hall of Fame career.
After retiring from professional boxing in 2005, Tszyu entered the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2011. And, he has remained a prominent figure in the sport, especially in Australia and is often remembered as one of the best light welterweights of all time.
Lionel Rose
Rose made history by becoming the World bantamweight champion in 1968, making him the first Indigenous Australian to win a world boxing title. His skilful and determined performances left a lasting impact on the sport.
Born on June 21, 1948, in Warragul, Victoria, Australia, Rose was the first Indigenous Australian to achieve major success on boxing’s biggest stage, when he upset Chucho Castillo by 15 round split decision in Inglewood, CA in December of 1968 capturing the WBC 118 lb. title.
The significant milestone that made him a national hero and therefore, a pioneer for Indigenous people back home. Rose’s victory and title reign was short-lived, as Ruben Olivares beat him in August of 1969 in his second WBC defence. Rose had more success and moved up to super featherweight, but lost in his only other world title bid to Japan’s Yoshiaki Numata in Hiroshima in 1971.
After retiring from the ring, he continued to be a beloved figure in Australian sports culture and contributed to various charitable causes. Lionel Rose passed away on May 8, 2011, but he remains a celebrated and influential figure in boxing history.
Danny Green
Known for his power and versatility, Green achieved success in multiple weight classes, including super middleweight and cruiserweight. His notable victories and longevity in the sport have solidified his reputation as one of Australia’s top boxers.
Born in 1973, in Perth, Western Australia, Green gained prominence for his aggressive fighting style and powerful knockout ability.
Throughout his career, Green held regional world titles. And, notably, he won the little-known IBO cruiserweight world title after two unsuccessful bids for the WBC world super middleweight championship earlier in his career. His greatest win (in terms of a named opponent) was his first-round KO of Hall of Famer Roy Jones in Sydney in 2009. However, Jones was basically a “shot” fighter at that stage.
Green is also known for having trained former undisputed heavyweight champ Mike Tyson in the 2000s, late in his career. He’s made a significant impact on Australian boxing, both in terms of his achievements in the ring and his contributions to the sport after retiring.
He has worked as a commentator and promoter, helping to promote boxing and support young fighters “down under.”
Tim Tszyu
Known for his impressive skills in the ring and his strong family legacy in the sport, Tim Tszyu is the oldest son of the legend, Kostya Tszyu. However, Tim quickly made a name for himself with his own powerful performances and impressive wins on his way up.
Tszyu has quickly risen through the ranks in the boxing world and became a first-time world champ for the WBO 154 lb. title in 2023. He made two defences of his title before suffering a horrific gash on his scalp during his title defence with Sebastian Fundora in March. Tszyu bled profusely for the final 10 rounds of the bout and lost a controversial 12-round decision.
