Top British Boxing Prospects: Adam Azim
Adam Azim (10-0, 7 KOs) has enjoyed a memorable 2023, winning three times, including his most recent dominant performance over Franck Petitjean, where Azim won the European super lightweight title. The Slough fighter also defeated Aram Faniian and Santos Reyes, capping a brilliant year for the British fighter. Azim has great footwork – and exceptional hand speed, which makes him a joy to watch. As the year has progressed, his shot selection has become more thought out and full of spite.
2024 looks set to be a memorable year for Azim, with his trainer, Shane McGuigan, waxing lyrical about the potential of the Brit following his win over Petitjean: “He is only scratching the surface of what he is really capable of.” Enock Poulsen seems the most likely opponent for Azim next, and he will provide a stern test for “The Assassin.”
Moses Itauma
Moses Itauma (6-0, 4 KOs) is another promising British fighter looking at a busy 2024 after winning all six professional contests in 2023. The Queensberry fighter most recently defeated Istvan Bernath on the Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou undercard.
He is comfortable switching between the body and head, and he possesses the power to end a fight in an instant. Itauma doesn’t rush his work and picks his punches well.
Viddal Riley
After being out of the ring for almost two years, Viddal Riley (10-0, 6 KOs) is back – and wants to reach the peak of boxing. The British fighter has won three times in 2023 and won the English cruiserweight title against Nathan Quarless via unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring the fight 100-90.
Riley seems to have identified his next opponent and has asked to fight British and Commonwealth titlist, Isaac Chamberlain. Riley has great ring IQ – and impressive hand speed, which has seen him overpower all his opponents. He punches with excellent variation, meaning a memorable 2024 is seemingly ahead for the British fighter.
Cameron Vuong
Cameron Vuong (2-0, 1 KO) is signed to Matchroom Boxing and has impressed in his opening two professional contests, with his most recent being a 60-54 victory over John Henry Mosquera. Vuong is lightning-quick and accurate with shot selection and slick with his movement.
He enjoyed an impressive amateur career, winning the senior elite ABA title in April 20023. He followed up that success by winning a Tri-Nation title before turning pro and winning his professional debut against Engel Gomez on the undercard of Leigh Wood vs. Josh Warrington. Following that debut victory, Eddie Hearn was full of praise for the young British fighter: “I don’t normally get in the ring on a debut for a photo but that was a special, special one.”
Maisie Rose Courtney
Maisie Rose Courtney (5-0, 0 KOs) is the first female fighter to train at the Matchroom Elite Gym under the tutelage of Tony Sims. She has ended 2023 winning all four of her contests, including the most recent win over Martina Bernile, who has shared a ring with Shannon Ryan.
Courtney is light on her feet and throws eye-catching combinations – while being hard to hit. She controls the distance well and knows when to engage and when to move. It will be fascinating – to see what 2024 has in store for the promising Londoner.
