WBO Prez not feeling WBC speciality belts

On Tuesday, the World Boxing Council (WBC) announced that they were staking not one, but two, Mayan belts on September 14th.

The matches that the Mayan belts being offered are the Tyson Fury versus Otto Wallin as well as the WBO 154 lb. title bout where Jaime Mungia is taking on Patrick Allotey.

WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman, of course, is happy that these belts are being presented in these matches.

“These belts are tremendous works of art which has Mexico`s heart in it. And whoever wins them will take them home and cherish them for the rest of their lives. It is a piece of history for Eternity. The Governors` choice was a draw, but no instant replay was needed in this one. And we feel it`s only fair to award two different belts to two different cards,” Sulaiman said.

World Boxing Organization President, Paco Valcarcel, needless to say, is not a fan of these belts.

“What the hell are these people from another sanctioning body doing handing out copper and silver, Mayan, pearl, studded aluminum, Aztec belts in bouts sponsored by other organizations, to contenders who don’t really care about these palooka belts. This needs to stop, enough already,” Valcarcel vented.

The WBC making these belts is just a long line of moves that has drawn controversy with the sanctioning body. The most recent events they have done is to use replay last weekend in the WBC Flyweight match. The replay was used then nullified the decision for Charlie Edwards and challenger Julio Cesar Martinez into a no contest.

They have also not only been creating belts, but they’ve also been giving fighters “Franchise” status such as Canelo Alvarez along with allowing rival sanctions becoming mandatory challengers which is why Luke Campbell ended up taking on the eventual winner by unanimous decision to Vasily Lomachenko.
