Title Fights From Around the World: Yuko Kuroki Faces Latest Challenger

Today, boxing world title fights take place around the globe and are more accessible to watch than ever before. Sometimes, championship bouts do not receive as much attention and go underreported. Big Fight Weekend commits to writing about boxing news, previews and recaps. As such, the site now has a recurring segment on championship bouts from around the world from the past week.

The focus of these pieces will be on clashes ranging from atomweight to heavyweight that had the WBA, WBC, IBF, and/or WBO titles on the line. This week’s edition of “Title Fights From Around the World” consists of just one recap. In Japan, a reigning minimumweight champion kept her title with a comfortable unanimous decision win.

Title Fights From Around the World: Yuko Kuroki Claims Comfortable Decision

Yuko Kuroki vs. Nanako Suzuki Fight Recap

Yuko Kuroki (25-8-2, 10 KOs) won a unanimous decision against Nanako Suzuki (9-4, 3 KOs) to retain her world title.

Scores for their June 28 bout were 99-91, 98-92, and 97-93. With the win, Kuroki remains the WBA minimumweight world champion. She won the title in January against Ye Kyeng Seo.

Kuroki-Suzuki headlined a Dangan Promotions card at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan. Fight fans in the country could catch the action live on Lemino. Those outside of Japan would have needed a VPN to watch the fight.

Suzuki opted for an aggressive approach and attempted to close the distance between herself and the reigning champion. Kuroki would not let this happen, however, and kept the fight at range. There was a moment in round five where Suzuki lost her balance after a right hand from her opponent (it was more of a nudge) as they both took a step forward. The challenger nearly touched the canvas – but did a bounce squat to get back up and tied up to prevent Kuroki from capitalising (if this explanation sounds confusing, just watch from 2:50 onwards in the video below).

The Difference

The straight left hand gave Kuroki plenty of success throughout the contest. Her ability to keep the fight at a distance was to her benefit as she won rounds by boxing at range. Suzuki struggled to impose her style, allowing Kuroki to box her way to victory.
