Xander Zayas Crowned Super Welterweight Champion at 22

Xander Zayas (22-0, 13 KOs) is now boxing’s youngest active world champion with a unanimous decision win over Jorge Garcia (33-5, 26 KOs).

Scores for their bout were 119-109, 118-110, and 116-112. With the victory, Zayas is now the WBO super welterweight world champion at just 22 years old. The vacant title was put at stake for this clash after Sebastian Fundora opted to rematch Tim Tszyu instead of making a defence against Zayas.

The bout headlined a Top Rank card – done in association with Zanfer Boxing and Golden Boy Promotions – at The Theater in Madison Square Garden in New York City, NY. Fight fans in the United States could catch the action live on ESPN, ESPN+, and ESPN Deportes. Those in Canada were able to do so with TSN.

Xander Zayas vs. Jorge Garcia Fight Recap

Garcia’s strategy over 12 rounds was to come forward in order to land his shots. However, Zayas dealt with this by staying on the back foot which helped him to keep the fight mostly at range. This was where the Puerto Rican did his best work. Although he still got hit clean with hard hooks from his opponent, Zayas was able to take the punches well and continued outboxing Garcia.

Whenever Garcia was able to close the distance, Zayas clinched to avoid taking further damage. Despite the Mexican’s best efforts, he was unable to impose his style. Zayas was in control for almost the entire fight. By keeping things at range he had little difficulty in landing his shots and did enough to win wide on the judges scorecards.
