Xander Zayas vs. Abass Baraou fight recap
Xander Zayas (23-0, 13 KOs) showed his class in a split decision win against Abass Baraou (17-2, 9 KOs).
Although one judge had it 116-112 for Baraou, the other two saw it 116-112 for Zayas. The Puerto Rican is now a unified super welterweight world champion with the victory. Zayas was making the first defence of his WBO title and now adds the WBA to his collection. Although one judge had Baraou winning, it appeared fairly clear that he had lost and he admitted so himself in the post-fight interview.
Zayas had a busy opening round, constantly throwing his lead hand but sparingly using his right. Baraou, fighting behind a high guard, struggled to land due to his opponent’s movement. Zayas appeared to sweep the first four rounds thanks to superior footwork and cleaner punches.
Baraou’s right hand started to find a home in the fifth. Although he applied pressure by coming forward, it was not enough to win rounds as his punch output was significantly lower than his opponent’s. Zayas also made sure to generally stay out of Baraou’s range.
Round nine saw both men trade several hard shots at close range. Zayas then chose to move along the ropes to avoid the slippery centre of the ring. The fight was slipping out of Baraou’s hands with each passing round. He went for broke in the twelfth. Zayas chose to stand directly in front of Baraou and trade, ending their unification bout on a thrilling note. When the final bell rang, the young Puerto Rican had done enough to become a unified champion.
THIS MEANS EVERYTHING.
