On March 29, William Zepeda vs Tevin Farmer 2 headlined a Golden Boy Promotions card at Poliforum Benito Juarez in Cancun, Mexico, live on DAZN. The lightweight main event saw Zepeda win by majority decision, in an entertaining clash, with Farmer showing his bravery and class to make it a competitive clash.

The opening round saw Zepeda (33-0, 27 KOs) force the pace for most of the three minutes, showcasing his quick hand speed. Farmer appeared to lose his footing during the second round, which prompted Zepeda to up the pace and land some well-placed shots to the head and body, which had the American in retreat mode. Despite the constant pressure from the Mexican – Farmer managed to survive the round.

Round four saw Zepeda force the pace again, backing Farmer (33-8-1, 8 KOs) up with brutal body shots, which the American absorbed admirably. Farmer had his moments during the round, with short, sharp combinations before landing a beautiful uppercut, which the Mexican fighter took well.

Round five saw Farmer struggling to survive under a barrage of punches from Zepeda before landing a huge uppercut near the end of the round. The heart of the American was evident as he continued to fight back despite having a clear issue with his left arm, which he had been struggling with since early in the fight.

Over the next few rounds, “2X” showed his experience and seemed to weather the onslaught from his opponent. During the championship rounds, the American had his moments, mixing his shots well, but the relentless pressure from Zepeda was overwhelming and helped him seemingly win most of the rounds.

The last round saw Farmer buzz his Mexican opponent, but Zepeda absorbed the shot well and ended the fight on top. This was an entertaining fight, with the unbelievable bravery of Farmer gaining plenty of deserved plaudits, but the incredible volume punching from Zepeda was the difference, which saw him win by a majority decision, with one judge scoring it 114-114. The last two judges scored it 116-112 and 115-113 for “Camaron.” Zepeda did enough to retain his WBC interim lightweight title.

Undercard

Oscar Collazo (12-0, 9 KOs) dominated Edwin Cano (13-3-1, 4 KOs) from the first bell, mixing his shots impressively. However, it was his brutal body work that forced the stoppage in round five, ensuring the 28-year-old southpaw retained his WBA/WBO minimumweight titles.

Joselito Velazquez (21-1-1, 13 KOs) overcame some difficulties during his flyweight fight against Adolfo Castillo Gonzalez (12-5-2, 7 KOs). He sustained various cuts during the fight, but ultimately ran out a comfortable winner by unanimous decision. The judges scorecards read 100-89 x2 and 97-92 in favour of Velazquez.

Robin Safar (18-0, 13 KOs) cruised through the opening four rounds before stepping on the gas in round five, stopping Roberto Silva (13-4, 7 KOs) in their cruiserweight bout.

In the female flyweight division, Yokasta Valle (33-3, 10 KOs) scored one of the biggest victories in her career, defeating Marlen Esparza (15-3, 1 KO) by split decision. The judge’s scorecards read 96-94 for Esparza, while the other two scored it 97-93 for Valle.

Untelevised Undercard

Cayden Griffiths (4-0, 4 KOs) continued the perfect start to his professional career, winning by stoppage against Fernando Elias Ruiz Hernandez (2-1, 1 KO) in the welterweight division.

Jonathan Rojas (12-4-1, 3 KOs) scored an upset in the featherweight division, defeating Gregory Morales (17-2, 9 KOs) by unanimous decision.
