Vargas wins against Aviles in Mexico

Former world champion Francisco Vargas got back to winning in a tough matchup against Ezequiel Aviles by ninth-round technical split decision in a slated 10-round lightweight fight in the co-main event down in Chihuahua, Mexico Saturday night,

This showing wasn’t the Vargas of old that everyone remembers with wars against Orlando Salido. It felt more like the Vargas we saw recently in the rematch against Miguel Berchelt in May. Having said that, Vargas started this contest in typical fashion with a cut above his right eye that took place in the first round with a clash of heads.

That head clash between Vargas and Aviles would be a factor in the fight down the line as the ninth round started, gotten worse, causing the ringside physicians to halt the contest. Once it went to scorecards, Vargas won with scores of  98-94 twice and 96-97 for Aviles. Despite the one close scorecard, this was a fight that Vargas was well in control of mainly due to the volume of punches he was throwing and landing on Aviles who couldn’t get anything going for most of the rough fight.

“It was difficult because my opponent would come in headfirst,” said Vargas after the fight.”He never hurt me, and I believe that I hurt him, and that’s why he would clinch me and come in headfirst. I’m going to take some time off to go to the doctor and get surgery in order to prevent anyone from taking advantage of this cut in the future.”

We’ll see where Vargas goes from here after that cut, which was pretty gruesome, but it was great to see him victorious in action after the Berchlet match. The fight was aired on Golden Boy Promotions FIght Night page via Facebook Watch if you wanted to replay it.

Another thing of note from this fight was the Golden Boy announced the Thursday Night Fights that have aired on the same Facebook page and Ringtv.com will now start being carried on the streaming platform DAZN starting October 24 with current WBO Light Flyweight champ Elwin Soto in the main event.
