Tim Tszyu Sends Message to Rival After Spencer Beatdown
On April 6 at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre in Newcastle, Australia, Tim Tszyu vs Joey Spencer headlined a Premier Boxing Champions card. Fight fans could catch the action on Foxtel Pay-Per-View in Australia and globally on Amazon Prime. It was a triumphant return to action for the Aussie fighter, dominating and stopping his opponent in round four.
Tim Tszyu Dominates Joey Spencer in Australia
Tszyu Issues Callout to Keith Thurman
Tszyu (25-2, 18 KOs) came into the fight under pressure having lost to Sebastian Fundora and Bakhram Murtazaliev. He began patiently and seemed to be working Spencer (19-2, 11 KOs) out before increasing the pressure in round three, having notable success with lead left hooks.
Tszyu upped the ante once again in round four, marking up the right eye of Spencer before unloading a vicious barrage of punches with his opponent unable to fire back with any significance and this ultimately led to the corner of Spencer throwing in the towel.
Relief for Tim Tszyu
Speaking after the win, Tim Tszyu was clearly relieved: “No pressure, man. I’m happy,” he said laughing. “Actually, yeah, there was a bit of pressure. I couldn’t do a third consecutive loss, but I hope I learned. I hope I teach people that if they drop and they go on the floor, and when shit hits the fan, you can always get back up and rise to the top.”
“I learned from my mistakes (against Murtazaliev). You don’t go in like a hothead from the first round and just abandon everything, so I learned my lesson,” Tszyu said. “And I had one hell of an opponent with me with Joey Spencer. So I’m blessed to share the ring with him and he’s gonna have plenty more opportunities in the future,” Tszyu said regarding mistakes he made in his previous fight.
“In all honesty, it was the critics,” he said when asked about the hardest part for him over the past year. “They’re always gonna be there, but to me it was proving it to myself, and I proved it to everyone in the world. I’m back, baby, I’m back.”
Tim Tszyu Delivers Message to Rival
When asked if he had a message for any of his rivals, “The Soul Taker” had a direct one for Keith “One Time” Thurman (31-1, 23 KOs): “Sign the contract big boy, sign the contract,” he said when asked about Thurman. “If the fans want it and we can bring a mega to Australia, the boys at No Limit, you know who to contact, and we’ll do a big show here.”
