Title fights from around the world – Thammanoon Niyomtrong and Sarah Scheurich edition
Today, boxing world title fights take place around the globe and are more accessible to watch than ever before. Sometimes, championship bouts do not receive as much attention and go underreported. Big Fight Weekend commits to writing about boxing news, previews and recaps. As such, the site now has a recurring segment on championship bouts from around the world from the past week.
The focus of these pieces will be on clashes ranging from atomweight to heavyweight that had the WBA, WBC, IBF, and/or WBO titles on the line. This week’s edition of “Title Fights From Around the World” consists of two recaps. In Thailand, a new light flyweight world champion was crowned. Over in Germany, light heavyweight received its latest champion.
Thammanoon Niyomtrong and Sarah Scheurich crowned champions
Thammanoon Niyomtrong vs. Junior Zarate fight recap
Thammanoon Niyomtrong (29-1, 11 KOs) is now a two division world champion following his unanimous decision victory against Junior Zarate (26-6, 9 KOs).
Scores for their bout were 117-111 and 116-112 (x2). Two other judges who had been assigned to score the contest also had it 116-112. Niyomtrong is now the WBC light flyweight world champion with the win. The previous titleholder, Carlos Cañizales, was unable to leave Venezuela due to the country’s travel security issues. As a result, he was declared champion in recess by the WBC and the vacant title was put on stake for Niyomtrong-Zarate.
The clash headlined a Dec. 4 Petpiya Fight card at the Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park in Thailand. Fight fans around the world could catch the action live on DAZN.
Niyomtrong consistently went to the body of his opponent. Zarate was clearly feeling the effects of those punches and struggled to deal with the pressure coming his way. He would switch to southpaw from time to time. However, this did not appear to bother Niyomtrong in any way. Zarate was able to finish strong, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
Lani Daniels vs. Sarah Scheurich fight recap
Sarah Scheurich (7-0, 4 KOs) is the latest to become a light heavyweight world champion following her unanimous decision victory against Lani Daniels (11-4-2, 1 KO).
Scores for their bout were 98-92 and 97-93 (x2). Scheurich is now the IBF light heavyweight world champion with the win. This was her first attempt at challenging for a world title and it saw her end the reign of Daniels.
The fight headlined a Dec. 6 Ruhe Boxing Promotion and Firat Arslan Boxing card at the Lambert Arena in Göppingen, Germany. Fight fans in the country could catch the action live on DAZN (Note: DAZN limited its broadcast of this event to Germany).
Scheurich was the taller fighter between the two (by at least five inches). She spent much of the bout on the back foot and used her reach to outbox her opponent. Although Daniels consistently came forward, her punch output was relatively lower. It allowed Scheurich to win rounds and win comfortably on the scorecards.
